Fan Post of the Week — Star Commentary

by in Food Network Star, June 20, 2012

In cooking for this week’s Star Challenge, Team Bobby’s Michele Ragussis was not exactly happy as a clam. She decided to create New England clam chowder as part of her team’s American-inspired seafood spread, and was banking on picking up a few bags of chopped clams — those that have already been cleaned, shucked and diced. However, as Star luck would have it, the market only had fresh clams in stock, forcing Michele to accept the trouble and time of prepping them herself.

On top of that, Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian stopped by with a mid-challenge secret-ingredient surprise, and asked that one finalist from each team work chicken livers into his or her dish. Michele took one for Team Bobby and accepted that task, choosing to adorn her chowder with a chicken liver toast. A bit overwhelmed by the amount of work to be done, Michele said, “I get stuck with chicken livers and I still have to shuck my own clams, so it’s just gonna take me forever.”

Though time-consuming and perhaps even downright annoying to use in a two-hour challenge, the fresh clams may have been Michele’s chowder’s best feature. The judges appreciated the natural flavors of the shellfish and complimented her use of such fresh ingredients. In fact, Susie Fogelson called the dish “one of the best chowders I’ve had.” She praised its texture and taste, saying, “I love the use of the clams. I love the creaminess of it. It’s got tremendous flavor.”

Star viewer Michelle Dee earned our Fan Post of the Week with her comment on Food Network’s Facebook page. She predicted that the fresh clams were indeed the best clams for Michele to use, even remembering that judges prefer fresh ingredients above all else. After all, no one wants to relive Orchid Paulmeier’s canned-oyster fiasco from last season of Star.

Is FNS still taping? As someone mentioned, can show producers make changes based on our comments?

As for the finale, I'm curious. The judges whittle it down, the finalists compete, and we vote (live?). That would be the next-to-last episode? After the vote, (however long this takes?) the finalists return for the winner to be announced amid much fanfare, the last episode?

    • Food Fan says:

Quite a few people have said the shows are already taped and done.
But now I see they are stopping the team challenges.
IF, we said the team challenges were stopping in-response-to all the negative comments/feedback about them on this Blog, then that would seem to make *more* sense. But people say its done. Coincidental or not, I'm glad to see everyone compete against everyone else.

Michele has had my vote from day one, simply put her recipes are great!!!! Meatballs were the hit for us with extra that made great sammies the next day... and I have been fair trying others ideas as well.

OK. tired of hearing how Linkie doesn't know this, or that...blah-blah. She came to this country at age 16. And yet, has never had the occasion to visit a food court? Has she been to a MALL? she's never had a churro? Or ANY Mexican food? no Tres Leches cake? How long do you have to be here, before you catch on to the culture? Those things may be true for her, but they aren't going to get you much sympathy.

I'd like to think coming to America for a cultural experience wouldn't be incomplete if somehow you haven't yet gotten around to flipping through the blacklight posters at Spencer Gifts, trying on plastic hairbands at Claire's or dining at Chik-fil-a and Auntie Annie's pretzels. I've managed to be an American citizen for nearly a half decade and never once had Tres Leches cake (and neither have my parents).

    • Food Fan says:

I was born in, and have lived in the USA for over 50 years.
I like going to the Mall. I enjoy a good plate o' Nachos. or a good Burrito.
But I had no idea what a Churro was, and I've never heard of Tres Leches.
I know what Black Forest cake is...

You all realize that the format is wired so that the finale consists of the remaining six contestants? the show is only 11 weeks long. Just wanted to inform you, everyone is talking about a final 2, a final 4, whatever.

    • Deanna says:

And so you know for a fact that there are no upcoming shows where more than one contestant is eliminated?

  5. cjcal says:

I appreciate you guys' help in understanding how FNS may proceed from here. Indeed, the plot will thicken, so to speak. The producers have plenty of practice with formats like Chopped, Sweet Genius, Cupcake Wars, Iron Chef, etc. Of course, having three mentors is a new twist. They could borrow an idea from Survivor and have past contestants compete or be on the judges panel. lol, Personally, I think immunity should go to contestants who use chocolate in their recipe.

PS, folks. Hey guys, I typed an earlier comment that mistakenly appeared under Athena's name. I don't know how this happened but I did message the website folks at that time. And I have made a very humble apology to Athena. The errant comment was the one about Martie's chattiness may help her during the press interview.

  7. cjcal says:

    Humble AND mortified.

  8. foodlover says:

Can't believe Linkie went home. She was so sweet, and some people think that her humility is a lack of confidence. It's not her fault she couldn't spell "Guacamole", She's only been in america for twelve years. Could you spell guacamole when you were twelve? Martita and Nikki have no right to say those things about her.

  9. Minty says:

Does anyone know if they at least stopped the clock for the "chicken liver interruption" ? Even if they did, it was still unfair to the contestants. What if something needed to come out of the oven in the next 30 seconds. It could have ruined someones dish.
I really love Michelle R, her personality shines. I would watch her if she had her own show. She clearly plays well with others - Nikki would be a handful to be around. I am not so sure I like the idea of America voting for the winner. We do not have the advantage of tasting the food. We can test the recipes, but I for one, am not going to shuck my own clams. What I do like is being able to vote for the personality I like.

  10. retiredvermonter says:

Do you REALLY think our "votes" mean anything?

This whole thing is staged. It's a show to amuse, not to do anything else.

    • Food Fan says:

I wonder who will go up in the Fan vote after tonight....and will it change yet again next week? Just a few more hours to go.
