Kara Sigle

To give you a sneak peek at the personalities of Team Alton, Team Bobby and Team Giada, we’re introducing a finalist per day leading up to the bigger-than-ever Food Network Star premiere on Sunday, May 13, at 9pm/8c. Don’t miss the casting special on Saturday, May 12, at 9pm/8c for a behind-the-scenes glimpse at each finalist’s road to Star-dom, including footage of their final one-on-one auditions with their respective team leaders.

Team Bobby's Kara Sigle is a 31-year-old caterer and fitness guru from Chicago. She learned to cook from her mom and likes to put a healthy spin on favorite tried-and-true dishes.

Fun facts about Kara from Food Network Magazine:

  • Claim to fame: She is a former San Francisco 49ers cheerleader.
  • Dream-show concept: Retro cooking. She'll dress up classic dishes like iceberg-lettuce wedge salad with homemade Thousand Island dressing.
  • Secret ingredient: Butter-flavored shortening. Kara uses it in her pie crusts. "It's a texture thing. It's flaky and has nice butter flavor, like old-fashioned Southern pie."

When someone's "secret ingredient"- is an artificially flavored, synthetic fat....I think that in and of itself should automatically disqualify someone to be the next food network star....does anyone have integrity anymore, when it comes to cooking??? another case of -let's pick the pretty one, who has no idea what she's doing in the kitchen....

  4. Amy Marsico says:

Obviously, this young woman has a clue why she's in the kitchen or she could not qualify to compete. Let's not judge her because she is pretty. That's just one more form of discrimination, which is never right. Many bakers would agree that buttery solid shortening makes the best tasting flaky pie crust. Not the healthiest! We make our own choices, as to healthier substitutes. I have seen plenty of professional chefs prepare recipes I know I would make some healthier substitutions on. Good luck to all the contestants, regardless of their looks!

  5. Athina says:

I'm not discriminating-I am simply stating, that good looking people, have an edge over others- that's a reality. Look at tv, there is not one person on the food network that is physically unattractive. My point was, I think using any artificially ingredient- and naming that as your "secret weapon"-definitely raises eyebrows regarding someones integrity-in regards to ingredients. I'm not even talking about the health aspect-but the artificial butter flavor??? That she's attractive can only help her, but deficiencies in her cooking ability shouldn't be overlooked because of this. That's all.

Hey Food Network, really.... Butter flavored shortening & iceberg to be kidding. Problem with Food Network Star last season is that some of the contestants should have been on Worst Cooks instead. Knowledge, use of ingredients & presentation is important - all of which last season lacked!!!! If I watch a show, I want the chef to know more than me & especially how to cook. I've watched cooking shows & learned from my mother but that doesn't make me a Food Network Star. So now Bobby, Giada & Alton are coaching them, sounds like they are making a new program - Worst Chef to Network Star.
