The “Mama Orchid” Fan Club

by in Food Network Star, July 12, 2011
We'll miss you, Orchid.

Early front-runner and Star fan favorite Orchid Paulmeier was driven out of the competition on Sunday night after a sub-par food-truck performance. Judge Bob Tuschman told the barbecue-loving, restaurant-owning mom of three that she tends to “simmer” while other finalists “are at full boil” in the competition.

Immediately following the shocking elimination, comments on Food Network’s Facebook page and our Star blog indicated that you devoted Star fans questioned whether or not it was really her time to leave. Many wrote that “Orchid was robbed” and that the judges made “a bad call” in sending her home. Others “expected her to be in it pretty much until the very end” and were simply confused by her departure, noting that “Her food has been lackluster the last few weeks, but the judges still seemed to favor her.”

One viewer wrote that “Orchid was a pleasure to watch and her food appeared to be something I would be willing (and frequently eager) to attempt,” though others were not as enthusiastic about the Southern "Mama." Several commenters noted that “she hasn't blossomed and seems to lack confidence in herself and her cooking abilities.” Another felt that it “shouldn't have taken this long to get rid of Orchid.”

Hear from Orchid in her Exit Interview and learn her plans for the future. How do you feel about Orchid’s elimination? Should other finalists have been sent home before her? Join the conversation on Facebook and Star Talk, and tune in next Sunday at 9pm/8c to see who goes home after the season's midterm.

What a miss for the Food Network. Orchid has that magnetic personality that people gravitate towards. Her smile alone makes you want to get to know her better. Giada seems so out of place here. She has a big warm smile but then makes some negative comments that aren't necessary. I find it hard to believe that she would even make the top 3 as a competitor in this show, seeing how they tend to judge favorably towards over-the-top personalities and drama-filled characters. Orchid was refreshing to watch and didn't get involved in the conflicts. It's apparent through the fan vote stats that she is "the people's" favorite. Oh well, it'll be another food network star winner's show that we will be skipping over.

what a big mistake they made by sending their biggest chance of a star home. Orchid is everything the FN is missing. They didnt even give her a chance. I guess they prefer nasty and bland food and really BAD personalities than a person that could have made them proud!

There is no one left on this season of FNS who deserves to win or is better suited to host her own show than Orchid! She is so warm, bubbly, purely postive and super charismatic - the kind of person who makes you want to be around her. She is cool under pressure and always ready with that dazzling smile - the cameras love her. So sad to see her eliminated by a fluke in the competition - she really deserved to win!!

I agree with most of the comments here. No way Penny should still be on this show. Should have gotten rid of her wit the burnt mac n cheese. FN going down the tube with the endless reruns and shows like this.

Orchid is a breath of fresh air! It was shocking to see her go. I wish the judges were able to see everything that was going on behind the scenes. They really made a mistake here.....

Orchid deserved to continue. PENNY AND CHRIS ARE WORTHLESS. YOU COULD NOT PAY ME TO WATCH THEM! Why bother having any fan input when what we say makes absolutely no difference?! You are not looking for the next FNS. All you want is a reality show on your network. You've lost me as a viewer until this FNS shame is over. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!!!

I was disgusted and appalled by the judges' treatment of Orchid. Apparently there is no room at the Food Network for a genuinely nice, talented, decent woman. I guess FN prefers addled frat boys or hateful nasty witches. I have enjoyed Next Food Network Star most other years but this year there is too much unpleasantness and the judging is incoherent and irrational. I will no longer be following the show.

  8. Glen says:

The judges' priorities are all out of whack. I guess they think obnoxious types like Chris and Penny are preferable to nice, normal, appealing people like Orchid Anyone with a modicum of class is deemed "boring." If a contestant doesn't jump up and down and scream like they're on meth, FN has no use for them. I can't watch the show anymore because the judges have lost all credibility.

Although most of us do not like Penny, it hasn't done much good to post it here. The winner is already chosen. We are asked to vote and to give our opinions. For what reason? The judges have decided and it seems they have decided they like Penny. I just hope they wised up before the winning vote was cast and decided not to choose her. Honestly, there is not a one of them that I think would make a show worth watching. Just saying...........

  10. Greta says:

The judges are hopelessly out of touch with the mainstream viewing audience. Why do they think we want someone like Penny coming into our living rooms....gag. Orchid on the other hand was a real gem but the judges let her slip away. Hope she still get a show on another channel.
