Warning: Once you try this spicy Korean condiment you’ll be hooked. Here’s why it’s an addiction you can feel good about.

What is Kimchi?
Kimchi (sometimes spelled kimchee) is made from a combination of cabbage, chiles, garlic, salt and vinegar. Depending on the season, other veggies like radishes, cucumbers and carrots may also make it into the mix. Ingredients are pickled and then fermented creating a pleasantly pungent, cool, spicy and crazy-delicious concoction that tastes good on just about anything.

Making your own kimchi (above, from Food Network Magazine) is totally worth the stinky cabbage aroma that may permeate for your fridge. But you can also pick up a jar at Korean markets, health food stores and large chain grocers like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.

Healthy Attributes
This condiment is super low in calories — only about 30 per ½ cup. In that same portion, you’ll also find a hefty dose of vitamin C and fiber.

Similar to yogurt, kefir and sauerkraut, kimchi is packed with tummy-pleasing probiotics, proven to help support digestion and immunity.
