A Healthy Sweet Treat -- The New Girl

Make Bobby Flay's brown sugar-spiced grapefruit for a healthy treat that will satisfy your sweet tooth.

With the arrival of 2013 came the usual self-promises and aspirations: Eat healthy, exercise every day, etc.  While these intentions are lovely in themselves, inspiration tends to wane once February comes around. Although I’ve tried, I’m not a salad-everyday type.

If you find yourself struggling to keep your resolutions, check out Bobby Flay Fit. In his seven-day web series, the grill master shares his secrets to leading a healthy lifestyle. By practicing moderation and using aromatic ingredients low in calories, Bobby proves that you can still enjoy delicious food while fulfilling your New Year's goals. What are his favorite guilt-free flavor boosters? Citruses and spices.

Bobby’s brown sugar-spiced grapefruit is as simple as it gets. In just a few minutes under the broiler, the ruby pink fruit caramelizes to perfection. The cinnamon and ground ginger balance out the bitterness of the grapefruit and provide the tasty satisfaction that usually comes from a freshly baked cookie or a slice of homemade pie. With just three teaspoons of sugar per serving, this seemingly indulgent treat will please your sweet tooth without undoing your whole day. Grapefruits are in season now, so make this soon.

Here are a few things to consider before making this recipe:

  • After its short time in the oven, the grapefruit is very juicy. To avoid a splattering mess, I recommend pre-cutting the wedges before digging in.
  • I enjoyed this recipe with a strong cup of coffee for an afternoon treat, but really, it’s great at any time of the day. Serving with a big dollop of Greek yogurt is highly recommended.
