The Veggie Table: Favorite Vegan and Vegetarian Blogs
For my last post, I wrote a round-up of some of my favorite vegetarian cookbooks. But these days, I’m turning to blogs more than books for recipe inspiration. I love when I Google a recipe and a new-to-me blog pops up with the perfect meal inspiration. This is my favorite way to come across new blogs, and fill up my reader with vegetarian meal inspiration posts. Here are a handful of my current favorite vegan and vegetarian blogs.
Fat Free Vegan Kitchen – Susan Voisin’s blog is filled with creative vegan recipes, without the use of any added fats from oil. FFVK is actually the very first blog I ever subscribed to, about six years ago, and I’ve been a loyal follower ever since. I do use oil in my own cooking, and don’t really hold back on added (healthy) fats, but Susan’s recipes are always creative and flavorful. My favorite of her recipes is the Cumin-Grilled Tofu With Papaya Salsa. And for someone who doesn’t typically love chocolate cake, I was completely smitten by her decadent Chocolate Covered Cherry Pudding Cake.
Oh She Glows – I don’t know what grabs me more in this blog: Angela Liddon’s seriously creative recipe ideas or her mouth watering (self taught!) photography. I love how she has a mix of familiar and unique vegan recipes, from Homemade Wheat Thins and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Blizzard, to Adzuki Bean and Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad With a Twist. I love all of Angela’s hearty, main-meal salads, and this Lightened Up Protein Power Goddess Bowl is one of my favorites.
Post Punk Kitchen – In my last post, I mentioned Isa Chandra is one of my favorite cookbook authors, so she deserves a double post to also highlight her well-organized blog. Many of her recipes veganize belly-warming comfort foods, without using quirky ingredients or giving fussy instructions. Most recently I made her Chocolate Chip Cookies, which are the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever had. Ever. It’s hard to believe they’re made without dairy or eggs.
Oh My Veggies – This is the newest vegetarian and vegan blog I’ve added to my Google Reader. I love that Kiersten, the Oh My Veggies author, writes a recap each Friday of what she ate that week, which is extremely helpful for me as I’m gathering meal plan ideas for the following week. This Caramelized Onion and Eggplant Puff Pastry Tart (pictured above) is on my list of meals to make and her BBQ Tofu method will convert any tofu haters. The photos in this blog are the icing on the cake, as they really make you wish you could get a special invite over to Kiersten’s kitchen for dinner.
Herbivoracious - Our Healthy Eats editor Michelle’s favorite vegetarian blog is Herbivoracious. I hadn’t seen this blog before she mentioned it, and now can’t stop clicking through each post! There are restaurant-quality meals that don’t have complicated, foreign-ingredient lists, like these Vegetarian Potstickers. I also love the career background of author Michael Natkin, who is a former software engineer turned food blogger and cookbook author.
Janel Ovrut Funk, MS RD LDN, loves experimenting with vegetarian and vegan cooking. Read her food blog, Eat Well with Janel, and follow her on Twitter @DietitianJanel. Catch up on her previous posts here.
