Market Watch: Sun Jewel Melon

After my weekly CSA delivery, I was prepared to write all about a gorgeous looking spaghetti squash that was in my share. But when I open the “squash,” I discovered that it wasn’t a squash at all, but a melon!

I put in a call in to my farmer (yes, proud to say I have her on speed dial); I wanted her to enlighten me – what was this bright yellow melon called? She introduced me to the Sun Jewel. This Asian variety (also called a Korean Yellow Melon) has pale yellow flesh that tastes similar to honeydew, but with more of a cucumber-pear flavor.

Sink into a juicy wedge of sliced melon or think outside the box. Add chopped melon to homemade ice pops, make melon salsa with chili peppers, onion, lime and cilantro, or shred and combine with carrots, chopped scallion and parsley for a melon slaw.

This is in my garden for the first time this year because I heard it had a pearlike flavor (which my husband loves) and it can be a sucessful vine in North Dakota. I am anxious to see if any are ready.

My CSA box had an Asian sun jewel melon too and I also thought it was an early and small spaghetti squash. The only difference is I emailed my farmer (instead of speed dial) to find out what it is! What a delightful surprise. I saved the seeds and will give it a try in my garden next summer.

I've never tried this variety of melon, but that photo makes them seem rather dry…

Best melon ever. I am in North Dakota and it's so hard to find melons that ripen early enough. My dogs discovered how good they are and started picking their own. Next year I'll have to fence them off.
