Three Red Foods You Should Be Eating

February is the month to think red — and not just because of Valentine’s Day. The shortest month of the year is also American Heart Month and National Cherry Month. Celebrate by adding more red foods like tart cherries, tomatoes and red cabbage to your diet. We spoke with Dr. Wendy Bazilian, MPH, RD to find out why these red foods are so important.

Tart Cherries:

To start, tart cherries (also called sour cherries) are full of powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and heart-health benefits. “People have sworn by tart cherry juice for decades for gout and pain related to joints,” says Dr. Wendy Bazilian, MPH, RD. Tart cherries are also a natural source of melatonin, and emerging research suggests it may help with insomnia.

Tomatoes:

Lycopene, the phytonutrient that gives tomatoes red coloring, provides great protection against heart disease. Add canned or jarred tomatoes to pizza, chili, and pasta; lycopene is known to be most effective when the tomatoes are cooked.

Red Cabbage:

A third red food that’s often overlooked in heart-health is red cabbage. “Cabbage has also been associated with anti-cancer properties,” Dr. Bazilian adds. Red cabbage can be eaten raw, in a salad or slaw, added to tacos (just like lettuce) or sauteed.

  2. Parkour is a self-directed sport,Nike Free Run+ 2 but there are a few fundamental moves that are used in its physical application. When combined with the proper amount of preliminary physical training, and mental dexterity, these moves can help anyone approach physical obstacles with cat like reflexes.
Parkour includes vaulting, running, rolling and jumping, but the most basic move is knowing how to correctly land. Overcoming obstacles with efficiency also means doing so without getting hurt. How someone lands will determine the amount of injury they could sustain. Because of this, proper mechanics in landing is extremely important to the sport.
When landing in parkour land on the toes and balls of the feet rather than flat footed. As the toes hit the ground, bend the knees. This will ensure a balanced landing with minimal injury to the knees or feet.
Proper balance in landing is important, but since parkour often occurs at high heights, proper balance while moving is also needed. When Nike Free
running, always run on the crest of the obstacle. A popular basic move using this is the cat crawl, a quadrupedal (four limb-ed) movement that looks similar to a cat running across a ledge.
Vaulting is a standard of parkour movements, and within the practice there are many different variations. Unlike the sport of pole vaulting, parkour vaulting does not use any outside apparatus to lift the body over an obstacle. For this sport, vaulting is done only with the hands.
The basic vault is performed by Nike Free Run running toward an obstacle and using one hand to push the body over that obstacle. Variations on the basic vault include different ways to approach the obstacle, but most of them end in one hand pushing the body over it. Some basic vault variations include the turn vault and speed vault.
Another vault is sometimes considered a hop. It is the basis of the pop vault. It also gives the appearance of running up the side of a wall, if done between two parallel obstacles. The goal of the wall jump is to reach enough height to eventually grab or jump over the obstacle.
If you are not landing, jumping, running or vaulting in parkour, you are probably rolling. Like the landing, the roll is a parkour movement designed to minimize injury. It has its origins in martial arts and is often used to minimize the impact from a gap jump.
To perform a roll, roll forward with the hands, then arms and finally, back hitting the ground. The movement will slow the body down from a gap jump, and is a safer landing then the standard bent knee landing. Because of what it does, the roll is sometimes called a break-fall.
All of Nike Free Run basic moves are designed to help those practicing parkour overcome physical obstacles in the most efficient way, while maintaining safety. They are physically challenging to do, but if someone begins with low obstacles and gradually increases the difficulty of the obstacles, even the elementary moves will also become more difficult and fun to execute
