You could win a copy of this cookbook.

Brown Bag ChallengeWe’re teaming up with fellow food bloggers to host a Brown-Bag Challenge, a month-long initiative to eat consciously and save money by packing a lunch each weekday instead of eating out. Join us here and share what you’re eating on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #brownbag.

Our friends and fellow brown-bag lunch champions at Big Girls, Small Kitchen have a new cookbook, In The Small Kitchen: 100 Recipes From Our Year of Cooking in the Real World. The book is, according to Phoebe and Cara at BGSK, “a quirky cross between a food memoir and a beautiful cookbook with delicious recipes and colorful pictures.” Within the book’s 300 pages, the BGSK girls take you on their own journey into independence and learning to cook and entertain in a grown-up, post-college world — all from a small kitchen, and on a modest budget. It’s true that not every recipe fits into our healthy recipe criteria, but here at Healthy Eats we’ve always stressed the importance of cooking from scratch — it’s almost always healthier than eating out, and always healthier than choosing a processed product. So for those just getting started in the kitchen, and those with more experience, this is the perfect book to inspire plenty of homemade dinners, party appetizers, special-occasion desserts and brown-bag lunches for the whole family.

You can order your own copy of In a Small Kitchen, or you can enter to win a copy here. Just tell us in the comments how you fared in our September Brown-Bag Challenge. Did you complete the full month? What was the best lunch you packed this month?

The contest starts at 10 a.m. EST today, and ends on Monday, October 3 at 10 a.m. EST.

You may only comment once to be considered and you don’t have to purchase anything to win; a purchase will not increase your chances of winning. Odds depend on total number of entries. Void where prohibited. Only open to legal residents of 50 U.S. states, D.C. or Puerto Rico, and you must be at least 18 to win. For the first day of the giveaway, all entries (answers) must be entered between 10 a.m. EST on September 23 and 10 a.m. EST on September 26. Subject to full official rules. By leaving a comment on the blog, you acknowledge your acceptance to the Official Rules. ARV of each prize: $14.95. Sponsor: Scripps Networks, LLC, d/b/a Food Network, 9721 Sherrill Blvd, Knoxville, TN 37932.

So tell us all about your brown-bag experience.

Made it all the way through! The roasted eggplant, chickpea and spinach salad I brought this week not only made the best lunch but reminded me of nights with girlfriends when we'd enjoy this dish together. Love Love Love BGSK – handling my own out here in Boston!

I brown bagged everyday! I love simple things like PB, apples, hummus, carrots and crackers. Some days I would pack leftovers like quinoa or amarynth with veggies!

Congrats to all of us!! I made it through the whole month…which was big for me, because eating out was my regular routine! I really loved participating and found that by packing my lunch each day it made me conscious of what I was eating at my other meals as well.

My favorite lunch was probably homemade chicken noodle soup (my Mom’s recipe)…is there anything better on a cold, dreary fall day?

I made it through the month! Favorite lunch– it's a tie. Favorite dinner leftover would have to be stuffed red pepper with brown rice and lean beef. Favorite original lunch would be a southwestern style green salad with chicken and avocado, on a whole wheat wrap.

PS: Would LOVE to win a copy of the BGSK booK!

My favorite lunch was a tuna with cranberries wrap and honey crisp apple, mmm. I think honey crisp apples are are the best variety and we picked them ourselves at a u-pick farm.

Working in an corporate office setting can sure be tempting when there is a constant array of catered meals and an on going delivery of Chinese food and pizza. I decided to commit to my self to start packing my lunch for the month of September and actually was able to realize my goal! One week I even got my coworkers involved! We all partnered up and each brought in a healthy item and had a fresh veggie family style meal together. Salads, wraps, pita and hummus, yum!

  9. Loved doing the brown bag challenge! Completed the whole month except one day when we had an all day off site meeting. However I didn't buy my lunch on that day and I saved my brown bag packed lunch for dinner that night….so I don't think that counts as cheating! The challenge definitely inspired me to stick with this healthy habit.

So what is our next healthy challenge??

  10. Allen says:

I've always brown bagged, so this was an easy challenge for me.

Participating in it with others and reading the various posts and blogs, gave me new ideas of how to keep my lunch fresh and exciting. Thanks for coordinating this event!
