Mee Goreng is a Malaysian noodle dish made with cabbage, tomato, egg, sugar, ketchup and soy sauce. The first time I made it for my husband, he looked at me like I was crazy. Then he tasted it – it’s incredibly delicious! What seems like a weird ingredient combination can come together to create a symphony of flavors and textures. Here are 10 off-beat food combos that dietitians from across the country are passionate about. Some sound amazing, others a little frightening – either way, I’m eager to try them!

Sweet and Cheesy

Louisa Dombloski, RD, LDN, gave us her recipe for Indian-inspired oatmeal: “1 teaspoon of cinnamon & turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 4 cloves… I add about 3/4 cup water to 1/2 cup dry oatmeal” She pops it in the microwave and tops it with ground flax seed & soy milk.

Salty Fruit
Elena Paravantes, RD goes for cantaloupe and feta cheese — I also love it with salty prosciutto. Our own Janel Ovrut makes her guacamole with avocado, honey, chili powder and salt – yum!

Eggs and Beans
