Foodies Weigh In

Here are 10 off-beat food combos that dietitians from across the country are passionate about. Some sound amazing, others a little frightening – either way, I’m eager to try them!

Sweet and Cheesy

Rosanne Rust, MS, RD, LDN goes wild for grilled cheese made with a slather of homemade grape jelly. Check out our tips for making jams and lightened up grilled cheese.

Another winning team is Brie cheese and honey. Marie Spano recommends paring it up with crackers seasoned with sea salt – love this idea! Read more on the wonders of honey.

PB & J …..or C, L or P or M!?!

Believe it or not, numerous people weighed in about their love of peanut butter sandwiches, but there was no jelly in sight! These folks love peanut butter with cucumber, lettuce, mayonnaise or even dill pickles! We recommend sticking with the natural peanut butter -- check out the results of our taste test.

Tasty Toast

Instead of butter, try toasted bread with a spread of white miso and nut butter or avocado -- a brilliant idea from the Veggie Queen Jill Nussinow MS, RD.

Spiced-Up Oats

Louisa Dombloski, RD, LDN, gave us her recipe for Indian-inspired oatmeal: “1 teaspoon of cinnamon & turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, 4 cloves… I add about 3/4 cup water to 1/2 cup dry oatmeal” She pops it in the microwave and tops it with ground flax seed & soy milk.

Salty Fruit

Elena Paravantes, RD goes for cantaloupe and feta cheese -- I also love it with salty prosciutto. Our own Janel Ovrut makes her guacamole with avocado, honey, chili powder and salt – yum!

Eggs and Beans

Meghan Olesnevich MS, RD uses hummus as a “condiment” for eggs. Toby has given this one a try first hand on her trips to Israel – it's a fun way to cut back on high fat add-ins like cheese and butter. Make your own healthy hummus in minutes.

Cool-Chocolate-Crunch

Get your fix for chocolate, fruit and crunch from food blogger Jenna A. Bell, PhD, RD, CSSD – she combines mango sorbet, chocolate syrup and healthy fats from raw almonds.

Latin Flare

Lorena Drago, MS, RD shared her love for this Latin American favorite -- white rice topped with a fried egg and a banana or sweet plantain.
