High-Cal Snack Attack!
Talk about a diet-buster — CSPI released their “Food Porn of the Month” and it was a whopper (no, not an actual Whopper). It was a 2,000-calorie shake from Cold Stone Creamery (that costs $5.50!). CSPI tartly compares drinking this dessert’s 69 grams of sat-fat to “slurping up two pounds of T-bone steak and a buttered baked potato through a straw.” Yikes.
Recalls of the Week
Ice cream, cantaloupe and pistachios are among the culprits hitting recall lists this week — all were linked to salmonella. Read up and make sure to remove these products from your kitchen. Stay tuned for more recall updates next week.
Post-Workout Breakfast of Champions
In a recent study, the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found cereal and milk was just as good for your muscles post-workout as a sports drink — especially after endurance-type exercises like running or biking. Could it be that a combo of wholesome carbs and protein are better than manufactured drinks? I checked with our Certified Athletic Trainer in residence, Dana. She says both the sports drink and the cereal and milk can be good choices, but it depends on the individual’s needs.
With your diet, not your car. (Though you might want to go hybrid with your car, too.) We’ve talked about the low-carbon diet before, and it’s becoming more mainstream these days. Find out how some people are contributing to saving mother earth and eating healthy at the same time.
Good News for Dog Lovers
Having a dog can help you lose weight. Yes, there’s a catch — you’ll need to walk your dog (which you should be doing anyway). There are even some books out about it: “The Dog Diet: What My Dog Taught Me About Shedding Pounds, Licking Stress and Getting a New Leash on Life” and “enLIGHTened: How I Lost 40 Pounds with a Yoga Mat, Fresh Pineapples, and a Beagle Pointer.” The titles make me laugh, but if it’s helps foks lose weight, I’m all for it.
