by in Shows, March 10th, 2014

Blue TeamOn Worst Cooks in America, 14 recruits have the opportunity of a lifetime: to be mentored by two renowned chefs, Anne Burrell and Bobby Flay. They arrive at Boot Camp with some of the worst kitchen skills imaginable, but if they’re able to last through seven weeks of competition without getting cut, they get the chance to be named the best of the worst and win $25,000 in prize money. Plus their mentor gets bragging rights — and this year Anne is fighting to win her title back after losing to Bobby last season. Unfortunately, two recruits, one from each team, must be eliminated every week.

Every Monday night, FN Dish has the exclusive interviews with the eliminated recruits from the Red Team and the Blue Team.

Worst Cooks Skill Drills: Flavor, Flavor, Flavor

by in Shows, March 8th, 2014

Alina and BobbyWhen it comes to cooking, the most-important aspects that determine a successful plate of food are taste and flavor — that’s a given. Food that tastes good is good. But on Worst Cooks in America, taste and flavor are oftentimes the last things on recruits’ minds. What happens quite often is they will overcompensate with salt or use way too many spices when they’re told their food is not flavorful enough. And on occasion they will mix up competing flavors, making, say, a Cajun curry — a dish that is confused and muddled.

The lesson that Anne and Bobby try to teach is taste, taste, taste. Taste as you go, as you cook, so you won’t end up oversalting your food before serving it. It’s all about layering flavors and making combinations that work well together and do not compete against each other. This is a cornerstone of learning to cook, and hopefully by the end of Boot Camp the recruits will have learned this lesson.

Worst Cooks Skill Drills: Knife Strife

by in Shows, March 1st, 2014

Bobby and recruitOn Worst Cooks in America, every recruit’s goal is to be a cut above the rest, to make it all the way to the end. And one of the most-important skills that can help them get to that point is wielding a chef’s knife properly. The first person to master that culinary fundamental has a better chance of turning out dishes that show precision. A knife can also be an accident waiting to happen, especially for those who don’t use it properly — many recruits have shown it’s easier to cut your finger than an onion.

The lessons learned here: First, don’t be afraid of the knife. Hold it as an extension of your hand. Second, be careful. Keep the fingers of your free had way from the blade and curled under. And third, use a sharp knife. A dull knife can slip and cause injury.

Dreaming Up Custom Doughnut Creations — Worst Cooks in America

by in Shows, February 28th, 2014

Bobby and AnneWhen it comes to doughnuts everyone has his or her favorite, whether it’s a simple glazed doughnut, a powdered, jelly-filled one or a Boston cream. A doughnut preference is also a reflection of one’s personality, as the recruits on the next episode of Worst Cooks in America prove. In a Skill Drill challenge, Chefs Anne and Bobby test the recruits’ abilities with flavor combinations by tasking them with making doughnuts from scratch — including the dough. There will be rising, kneading and punching down!

After tasting various options from a doughnut truck, the recruits will have their own chance to create doughnuts that the mentors have asked be unique, well-balanced and flavorful. FN Dish wants to know, if you were told to come up with your own personal doughnut creation, what would you make? What would be your winning doughnut flavor combination?

Worst Cooks Skill Drills: Ingredient Shmingredient

by in Shows, February 22nd, 2014

Anne Burrell and MichaelHave you ever shopped for a recipe and discovered that you forgot an ingredient or two once you got home? If it’s any consolation, it happens to the best. Or maybe you just can’t find an ingredient you thought you had for a recipe you planned to make. Your immediate reaction might be to come up with a substitution, but that’s not always the best idea. As Boot Camp recruits from Worst Cooks in America (Mondays at 9|8c) prove, some ingredients are not that easily exchangeable. Blue cheese for feta? Not really. Cilantro for parsley? It depends on the recipe (going for Mex-Ital?). Salt for sugar in a baked good? OK, it might have been an accident, but you can’t serve that!

If there’s one lesson to learn it’s this: You’ve got to know your ingredients and understand them. Watch the video to see some of the ingredient-swap sins committed in Seasons 3 and 4 — and you’ll know exactly when to point them out while watching the new season.
