Coaching a Celebrity Worst Cooks Winner: Rachael Ray on Her First Win in Boot Camp

by in Shows, November 3rd, 2016

Loni and RachaelWhen it comes to Worst Cooks in America, there aren’t many other mentors who can beat Chef Anne Burrell, who holds the record for most wins (six out of eight). But in Season 9, mentor Rachael Ray — coaching only her second season in the series — rose to the top with celebrity recruit Loni Love. Rachael’s strategy of finding what her recruit loves about food and bringing that to the forefront worked successfully. Loni cooked a Southern comfort menu that came straight from the heart. It touched and impressed the judges, who awarded her the win. Loni left with $50,000 for her charity, the American Red Cross. And Rachael left with quite amazing bragging rights, having broken Anne’s record.

FN Dish sat down with Rachael on the set of Worst Cooks to find out more about how she approached the finale and coaching Loni to the win, as well as what she thought about being in the competition with Anne.

Read on for Rachael’s take on her success this past season.

The Red Team and the Blue TeamNot everyone can be a winner, but on Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition, both Loni and Nicole were winners just for making it to the finale. After weeks of difficult cooking challenges, the ladies showed they could cook like the best of them. Going into the finale, they represented their mentors Rachael and Anne in one last cook-off. If Anne won, it would mean another season with an unbroken record. But for Rachael it would mean her first win. Determining the outcome came down to a blind tasting by a panel of experts, who tried all three courses from both recruits before awarding the winner $50,000 for her chosen charity.

Elimination challengeThis week on Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition, the recruits were tested on teamwork, communication skills and complex cooking techniques. We saw the return of Remote Control Chef, which had each team directing their mentor in cooking a recipe. The teams came together and worked well under the pressure. The Main Dish challenge, however, would prove to be an exercise in frustration for some, especially when it came to using a vast array of unfamiliar spices. The Red Team’s Matt and the Blue Team’s John ended up being nominated for the elimination challenge, where both had to create their own kebabs in order to save themselves. But an accident almost derailed one of the recruits. Find out who got sent home and who saved himself to cook another week.

Blue TeamIn a surprise turn of events last week on Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition, no recruit was eliminated from Boot Camp. But this week that wasn’t the case. Facing a chicken-and-waffles challenge may have seemed dandy at the first mention, but once Chef Anne revealed there would be chicken butchering involved, everyone was terrified. Executing that task was a challenge, and cooking the chicken through was yet another — one that Matt and Mindy couldn’t accomplish. The two ended up in the elimination round, where (surprise!) they had to butcher chickens once again for the mentors to judge blind. The recruit with the best and most pieces would get a pass to next week, and the other would be sent home.

Red TeamWith every week of Worst Cooks in America, Boot Camp gets more difficult — and sometimes a bit more cringe-worthy. This week’s challenges forced the teams to make sausages from scratch. And sausage isn’t the easiest thing to watch being made, especially if you’ve got a dirty mind like the remaining seven celebrity recruits, most of whom are comedians. At the end of the challenge, it all came down to who made the best links. Having the most trouble among all the recruits, John and Tommy turned out the worst sausages, and they were chosen for the elimination round — where they had to fill sausages again! The one who passed with the best quantity and quality would advance to next week; the other would go home.

Boot Camp recruitsAfter their first week of Worst Cooks Boot Camp, the celebrity recruits had their official day of lessons and challenges in tonight’s second episode. Both teams faced a Hawaiian cooking challenge, preparing not one dish, but two: an appetizer and an entree. For those with limited culinary experience, and just 60 minutes on the clock, that’s a feat easier said than done. Unfortunately two recruits ended up being nominated for the elimination challenge, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and I Dream of Jeannie’s Barbara Eden. The one who passed the blind judging would live to see another week of grueling Boot Camp, but the other would be going home.

Worst CooksThis new season of Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition started off with nine recruits, but unfortunately there was room for only eight in Boot Camp, four per team. But one was left the odd man out. Find out who was the first celebrity to exit Boot Camp.
