The holiday season may be jolly for many of us, but let’s not forget that in the United States, 16 million kids are at risk of going hungry, especially at this time of year. If you’re still looking for that perfect gift, give one that will really make a difference. Share the spirit of the season by donating to No Kid Hungry to help hungry children in America.
Five reasons to donate this holiday season:
1. There are 16 million kids in the United States who will face hunger this year, but they don’t have to. As a nation, we have plenty of food and we also have programs in place that are designed to feed kids. No Kid Hungry is making sure these kids are getting connected with these programs. Childhood hunger is a solvable problem.
2. The No Kid Hungry campaign is making sure more kids start the school day with a healthy breakfast so that they’re ready to learn.

Today there will be no swapping of recipes. Instead, the food community will gather at noon to educate, showcase and highlight local heroes and charities that are giving it their all to raise awareness to fight one of the nation’s biggest issues: hunger.
More specifically, one in every five children in the United States struggles with hunger. According to Congressman Jim McGovern, “We are the richest country on the planet and not a single community is hunger free.” Every year, 16 million children struggle with hunger — that’s the population of Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago combined. There are no easy solutions, but we can’t afford to do nothing.
This Saturday evening, Food Network will premiere Hunger Hits Home, a documentary that gives viewers at home a firsthand look at the crisis of childhood hunger in America through the eyes of the parents, children, anti-hunger activists, educators and politicians.
One of the biggest misconceptions regarding hunger is that if a person works, there should be no reason he or she or their family should go hungry. And yet, 11 million children go to school having not eating breakfast.
Four ways to take action against childhood hunger today

It’s that time of the year again when Share Our Strength hosts the Great American Bake Sale, an incredible feat that asks people across the country to host or participate in a bake sale to raise money for the 1 in 5 kids in America struggling with hunger on one day, Saturday, April 28.
This year, Bloggers Without Borders is working with our own writer Gaby Dalkin, of What’s Gaby Cooking, to help spread the word via bloggers. Well, FN Dish wanted to help, too. Last year, they raised $25,000 through 26 bake sales. This year, Share Our Strength has set a challenge to raise $50,000 with the help of bloggers from all 50 states.
With just $1 connecting a child to 10 meals, the community would be helping Share Our Strength ensure that the more than 16 million kids facing hunger today never go hungry again.

This morning, Food Network, Share Our Strength and members of the Congressional Hunger Caucus unveiled a holiday food drive in partnership with Whole Foods Market that will provide 90,000 meals in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas, and 45,000 more in Philadelphia by Christmas. Food Network and Whole Foods Market are partners in Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America.
Marc Murphy and Amanda Freitag, judges on Food Network’s Chopped, today visited a Whole Foods Market in Washington to purchase fresh foods and pantry items for donation to the Capital Area Food Bank. “As chefs, we shop for food all the time and almost take it for granted,” said Murphy, “This really puts a different perspective on grocery shopping and what it means to put food on the plates of those who battle hunger.”

With Thanksgiving and the holidays right around the corner, it’s important to remember to donate to those in need, especially children.
Last week, Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign celebrated its one year anniversary with Food Network and campaign spokesperson Jeff Bridges. The No Kid Hungry Pledge is a daunting task, but with a committed army of supporters, Share Our Strength is confronting childhood hunger head-on with a goal of ending it by 2015.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to work with Share Our Strength. They do such incredible work and they inspire us as a company to try and be better. We’re excited to use the power of Food Network to help them raise awareness on this issue — our employees are excited, our chefs are excited,” said Brooke Johnson, President of Food Network.
During the celebration, guests also got a sneak peek of a documentary Food Network is producing around the issue of childhood hunger in America, which will release in 2012.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium will host a Cooking for Solutions celebration May 20-22, featuring great chefs, gourmet cuisine and fine wines. On Saturday May 21, the event will feature presentations from Alton Brown and Robert Irvine, highlighting the use of sustainable seafood while saving the oceans and helping home cooks discover new and delicious ways to serve seafood dishes. On May 22, Montage Laguna Beach will host Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation event. Share Our Strength is a charity that hopes to eliminate childhood hunger in our country and 100% of ticket sales go to the cause. Scott Conant of 24 Hour Restaurant Battle is one of the participating chefs this year and a VIP ticket offers a chance to meet him, along with other chefs while enjoying food, wine and specialty cocktails. Skip lunch, you say? At Food Network? Blasphemy! But don’t worry, it’s all for a good cause. Every year, our office participates in the “Skip Lunch, Fight Hunger” event that benefits City Harvest, an innovative local NYC food charity. In their own words: Now serving New York City for over 25 years, City Harvest is the world’s first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city’s hungry men, women and children.
What they do is quite cool: City Harvest’s fleet of trucks rescues perfectly edible food that would otherwise be thrown out at restaurants, event venues, farmers markets, office buildings and grocery stores, and then redistributes that food to soup kitchens and food pantries across the city.
In fact, our own Food Network Kitchens participates in City Harvest food donations every Friday — you see them in action at Food Network by going here. City Harvest has a lot of other great programs, and they’ve teamed up with Food Network’s official charity partner Share Our Strength(SOS) to provide SOS’s “Operation Frontline” nutrition and cooking education classes in New York (which I’m actually a volunteer for!)
The Skip Lunch, Fight Hunger fundraising idea was dreamed up by Dana Cowin, editor-in-chief of Food & Wine magazine and one of City Harvest’s board members. The premise of the idea is simple: brown-bag your lunch for a day, then take what you would have spent on lunch and donate it to City Harvest. Lunch in New York is rarely a cheap proposition, especially in our temple-to-gourmet-food office location of Chelsea Market. One can easily spend $10 here on just a sandwich and a drink. But according to City Harvest, that $10 would help feed seven children for a week.
This year’s fundraiser is today, May 6th, and many of our employees will be chipping in their lunch money to help support City Harvest’s efforts to make sure no New Yorker goes hungry. If you’d like to learn more about the fundraiser or would like to make a donation online, visit www.skiplunch.org.
As the season of giving (thanks and otherwise) approaches, it feels like a good time to revisit an important Food Network friend and ally.
