#TBT: Sandra Lee

by in Food Network Chef, December 5th, 2013

Sandra LeeIt’s Thursday, and while that means everyone is just one day away from the weekend, it also means it’s time to throw back — to an earlier period in Food Network’s history. Check back on FN Dish every Thursday to find the latest #tbt of your favorite chefs and get a retro look at their earliest days on TV.

With nearly a decade’s worth of experience on Food Network, Sandra Lee knows the ins and outs of food television and what it takes to be successful on air. She’s managed to find the sweet spot in which she’s not only cooking tried-and-true quality recipes, but doing so in an approachable way that teaches fans and inspires them to get in the kitchen as well.

Sandra has hosted several series on Food Network, and each furthers her commitment to easy, family-friendly recipes that everyday home cooks can tackle. She’s a firm believer in the semi-homemade concept of cooking — the notion that store-bought products can be used alongside fresh ingredients to create home-style dishes — and the idea even inspired one of her first shows, Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee. Every week she’d introduce dishes like Teriyaki Salmon Strips and 5-Bean Chili that combined simple shortcuts, like prepared teriyaki sauce and chili seasoning mix, respectively, with fresh goods, so that viewers could not only put food on the table quickly, but feel good about what they were serving as well.

Food Network Stars Share Thanksgiving Entertaining Tips

by in Entertaining, Holidays, November 24th, 2013

Food Network Stars Share Thanksgiving Entertaining TipsFor Turkey Day, Food Network stars aren’t just making masterpieces in the oven; they’re also setting an impressive holiday table for dinner guests. With a few tips and tricks from Giada, Ina and Sandra, you can turn your dining room table into one fit for a Thanksgiving celebration.

Giada likes to spoil each of her guests with their own dish for olive oil. At each guest’s place setting, there’s also a special place card. “I have the person’s name on one side,” says Giada, “and on the other side I have his or her favorite hobby or passion. It’s a great conversation starter and it guarantees that the night will be full of laughs and lots of fun.”

To make kids feel extra special at their Thanksgiving table, Giada makes homemade chocolate-covered pretzels covered in sprinkles, and then wraps them up with a nametag for each child. Instead of a tablecloth, Giada rolls out butcher paper to give kids a place to draw on.

What’s Hot in Desserts: Ice Cream

by in Events, News, October 18th, 2012

ice cream sweet event nycwffWhen you think of desserts, cookies, cakes, cupcakes and brownies usually come to mind first. But at Sandra Lee’s recent Sweet! event at the New York City Wine & Food Festival, the real star of the show was ice cream. Whether it was sandwiched between bites of doughnut, paired with a cupcake or eaten on its own, no two dishes were alike.

Diana Hardeman of MilkMade Ice Cream offered up scrumptious cranberry chocolate chip ice cream. Handcrafted with big hunks of both cranberry and chocolate, this homage to fall wasn’t your average pint.

Taking a more classic approach with an unexpected twist, Le Bernadin’s Chocolate Pink Peppercorn Ice Cream Sandwiches contained just the right kick of spice to bring out the subtle flavor of the chocolate sandwich base.
