At least once a month, my mom calls strictly to talk potlucks (we talk every couple of days, but these potluck calls are different from our regular, rambling conversations). We discuss what she has in her refrigerator, the produce that’s currently coming out of the garden and if there’s any theme for the potluck that she and my dad are scheduled to attend.
Over the years, we’ve created massive couscous salads, wintertime braises that can be made for cheap and salads constructed from shaved zucchini and mint. Though I can’t offer my potluck consulting services to everyone out there, here’s what I have in mind when dreaming up dishes with my mom.
Two of Food Network’s most popular personalities, Rachael Ray and Guy Fieri, are going head-to-head in a new series premiering this winter, Rachael vs. Guy Celebrity Cook-Off. Both Rachael and Guy will serve as coaches and mentors to eight multi-talented celebrities — from an Olympic gold medalist to Grammy-winning artists to a Golden Globe-nominated actor — contestants who are all passionate about food and cooking.
Divided into Team Rachael and Team Guy, the contestants will face intense weekly challenges that are sure to have them working, fighting and laughing as they race against the clock to prepare elaborate meals for up to 150 guests. The winning and losing teams will be chosen by the guest diners and after six episodes, the last celebrity standing will win a cash donation to his or her favorite charity.
This Sunday, the six remaining Food Network Star contestants face not one, but two all-star personalities — Rachael Ray and Ina Garten. So we just have to ask the question: Who would you rather cook for?
Rachael Ray cooked with Graham Kerr, host of The Galloping Gourmet, on a recent episode of the Rachael Ray Show. Graham is known for launching one of the first classic cooking shows and has inspired many television chefs (including Rachael) to follow in his footsteps. Guy Fieri dished out tips in a video with Extra revealing his three simple rules to follow when dieting. He cites, “Moderation, exercise and eating in courses to ensure that even when surrounded by food you don’t give in to temptation.” Guy makes sure that the food he consumes is “really good” since he doesn’t count calories and tries not to waste them — his guilty pleasure is anything salty. In her recent interview with People magazine, Rachael Ray confessed that she makes a dog-friendly version of almost every meal she makes for dinner for her dog Isaboo. In addition to home-cooked meals, Isaboo claims the center spot of the bed between Rachael and her husband, “We haven’t slept well in six years,” says Rachael.

Last week, three of the talented pastry wizards from Last Cake Standing— Jason, Jörg and Richard— were up in Food Network Kitchens working on a special project. It wasn’t totally top secret, so we’ll spill the beans: They’d been asked by Rachael Ray to come up with over-the-top cakes inspired by the upcoming Royal Wedding.
Each cake artist took a different direction; beyond the Royal Wedding theme, they had free rein to follow their own inspirations. Tomorrow, the guys will present the final creations on the Rachael Ray Show and Rachael will declare a winner. We hear the Royal Couple is planning to serve traditional English fruitcake at the reception, but if Will and Kate happen to catch Rachael’s show and see these beauties, I’m thinking they might reconsider.

I’ve been bursting at the seams wanting to tell you about it ever since I saw the line at the Chicago Housewares Show back in March. For those of us who love nothing more than playing around in the kitchen, getting new toys to play with is like being a kid on Christmas morning. And since I’m addicted to baking, getting the cookie sheets, muffin tins, cake pans, and loaf pans was like getting a visit from my kitchen fairy godmother. And boy, have I had fun with them.
