Now that you’ve officially used up the last bits and bites of your Thanksgiving feast, it’s high time to switch your focus to a sweeter agenda: holiday baking. ‘Tis the season for dressed-up gingerbread people, creamy mint cheesecake, sugar-dusted sugar cookies and more baked favorites, each brimming with the good cheer of the holidays.
From now through the end of the year, as you roll up your sleeves and prepare to roll out cookie dough, you can join Food Network and No Kid Hungry as they team up to provide 1 million meals to children who need them most. All you have to do is take a picture of whatever you’re already baking, share it on social media using the hashtag #BakeItForward and nominate a friend to do the same. With each photo that’s shared and tagged, Food Network will donate $1 to No Kid Hungry — and $1 provides a whopping 10 meals to those in need.

I spent most of my week in Washington, D.C., and North Carolina, supporting No Kid Hungry’s efforts to feed our nation’s children. I attended the No Kid Hungry Summit alongside thought leaders, corporations, foundation heads and some of the best chefs nationwide. I joined forces with many of them to spend a day on Capitol Hill, meeting with our legislators, and I hosted two Taste of the Nation events in D.C. and Charlotte. Phew! As I type, I’m sipping a strong cup of coffee (after a 3 a.m. wake-up call!), sitting on a plane headed home to San Diego.
Why would I spend nearly a week away from my family and take that kind of time off from my “regular” work?

If fans’ support for Kids Baking Championship, Duff Till Dawn and Holiday Baking Championship are any indication, many a Food Network viewer has a sweet tooth. This spring, Share Our Strength is giving fans the opportunity to bake their hearts out for a worthy cause: their annual Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry. Now in its 13th year, this annual nationwide fundraiser has raised more than $10 million to help end childhood hunger in America, and so far more than 1.4 million people from coast to coast have participated in selling their sweetest treats.
This year’s challenge weekend is from April 17 through 19, and while bakers are encouraged to host their sales on those days in an effort to blanket the country in bake sales all at once, they can be held anywhere at any time. As you look ahead to spring, consider setting up shop with your most-decadent desserts for sale outside a supermarket, at your local town’s festival, or at your school or workplace. Each baker who raises at least $1,000 will be inducted into the Bake Sale Rock Star Club.

September is Hunger Awareness Month. You might have noticed that the Food Network and Cooking Channel logos have Gone Orange to support childhood hunger awareness and No Kid Hungry. How can you Go Orange? You’ll find several different options at FoodNetwork.com/Hungry, but we have an idea for you if you want to take it a step further.
Inspired by the color orange and the September weather, Food Network Kitchens thought it would be a great idea to set up orange-lemonade stands — before it gets too chilly — to benefit No Kid Hungry. Orangeade stands, if you will. It’s a great opportunity to spread awareness, teach the little ones about childhood hunger and support the cause as a family. The great thing about No Kid Hungry is that every cent goes a long way. As you’ll see on their website, “every dollar you donate can connect a child in need with up to 10 meals.” In other words, if your orangeade stand raises $5, that could potentially turn into 50 meals.
