A Mother’s Day Simple Soirée

by in Entertaining, Holidays, May 11th, 2012

blueberry raspberry muffins
It goes without saying that Mother’s Day is always a fun day in our house. Instead of giving her gifts every year, I like to cook up a big delicious brunch so we can all lay around the house, eat great food and relax. It’s something we do quite well.

My mom is also quite the picky eater, so I have to tailor my menu to fit her palate. One thing that I can never go wrong with is any kind of baked goods. We have a sweet tooth in my family and these Blueberry Muffins that I’ve adapted from Alton Brown are always a hit.

I brightened them up with lemon zest and raspberries, and then whipped up the most addictive Chantilly Cream. Heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and a vanilla bean is a match made in heaven.

These blueberry-raspberry muffins topped with Chantilly Cream are the perfect way to show your mom some love this Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful mothers out there, and thanks to my mom for being so amazing.

by in Holidays, Recipes, May 9th, 2012

deviled eggs 5 ways
Here in Food Network Kitchens, we love simple, classic recipes. We are also paid to think about food all day. So we’ve taken classic foods and drinks and reimagined them into three, four or five different ways. No standard recipes here, just the occasional technique and pictures. Think of it as a picture recipe.

To us, deviled eggs are the perfect party food.  Not only are the majority of the ingredients already in your refrigerator and pantry, they cook up fast and they’re crowd-pleasers.

Start with the classic, then experiment

The 5 Best Meals You Can Make Mom This Weekend

by in Holidays, May 6th, 2011

rhubarb crumble
The simplest way to thank mom this Sunday is with a homemade meal — it’s simple, but more importantly, it comes from the heart. With numerous recipes to choose from, Food Network has pulled together its favorite Mother’s Day recipes in one place — for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

1. Breakfast in bed made by the kids. Mom shouldn’t be anywhere near the stove or the sink this Sunday, so gather up the kids and let them try Giada’s recipes like Baked French Toast with Blueberries and Citrus Cream Smoothies. These recipes are easy for the little ones to make (with supervision) and delicious enough for the whole family to eat.

2. Schedule tea time. If you’ve planned a large breakfast, opt for a lighter lunch. Ask mom to dress up (make sure she wears a hat) and have a cup of tea with her. Tea sandwiches are an old-fashioned favorite, but these recipes transform the classics. Be sure to try the Ham, Brie and Apple, Olive-Focaccia and Pesto Chicken varieties.

Spring Fling: Rhubarb

by in Holidays, In Season, May 4th, 2011

rhubarb
We’re teaming up with food and garden bloggers to host Spring Fling 2011, a season-long garden party. In coming weeks, we’ll feature favorite garden-to-table recipes and tips to help you enjoy the bounty, whether you’re harvesting your own goodies or buying them fresh from the market. Recently, we dove into the world of asparagus — today, we’re exploring rhubarb.

Rhubarb is a large reddish, celery-like stalk with large green leaves. Even though rhubarb is commonly paired with strawberries to create tarts, cobblers and pies, this lengthy root is a vegetable. It tends to be tart, needing the addition of ample sweeteners like sugar and additional fruits.

Here’s how to incorporate rhubarb in your Mother’s Day menu »
