If you’re looking for something to add to — or in place of — that fruit basket or flower delivery this Mother’s Day, why not try a cookbook? The following titles are overflowing with fantastic recipes, but they contain far more than just food. Each of these new cookbooks offers its readers a window into a different world, providing a unique sense of place, and the dishes that go along with it.
What Katie Ate on the Weekend
Food photographer and world traveler Katie Quinn Davies is a superstar in her native Australia, and it’s easy to see why. This lush book is filled with snapshots of far-flung locations and picturesque food. The recipes look lavish but are easily accessible for home cooks — think chicken thighs with pomegranate molasses, puff pastry tarts with chorizo, and chocolate brownies with salted butterscotch and cherries. Clocking in at a hefty 320 pages, it’s eminently giftable, offering up kitchen inspiration and bedtime reading all in one. Avery, $40

Just like the macaroni necklace and the finger-painted masterpieces you gave her years ago, something homemade is always the key to Mom’s heart, especially on Mother’s Day. Before you place that order for another wilted, mass-produced delivery bouquet, stake out your kitchen to make an opulent homemade gift that will make Mom weep with joy: a cake. Frosted or naked, tiered or single-story, boxed-up or sliced on the spot, each of these decadent cakes is a thing of beauty that shows Mom how you feel with every slice.
Ree Drummond’s Strawberry Shortcake Cake (pictured above) oozes with sweet strawberries, and we can’t cut into this cream cheese-frosted beauty soon enough. Instead of plunging candles in it like it’s her birthday, present it to Mom with plump strawberries nestled in the icing for a most-beautiful celebratory cake. Plus, with a bit of help, even Mom’s little ones can get involved in the creation of this cake. Ree’s girls helped with each of the steps.

It’s almost Mother’s Day: the day to appreciate motherhood even more than we do on other, ordinary days. Who cares that the holiday was invented by a greeting card company? Moms rock, and we love them.
Moms make us think of babies, and babies are cute. They’re just designed that way. We like to look at them. We like to talk about them using teeny voices. Baby fruits and vegetables are basically our two favorite things rolled up into one: Babies plus Food.
On this special day we wanted to send out some love to the hardworking vegetable and fruit moms for giving birth to them. First up (above): baby ghanoush.

Before Mom even rolls out of bed on Mother’s Day, show her you care with a cheery breakfast-in-bed spread. With this easy option, the egg whippers, pancake flippers and table setters in your life — aka the kids — can lend a hand without waking Mom.
If Mom has so much grace she can balance a plate of pancakes with maple syrup in bed, you should undoubtedly flip some of Trisha Yearwood’s blueberry pancakes. Whether from a box or made totally from scratch, a short stack is sure to start Mom’s day off right. Or, let the kids dip thick slices of brioche or challah in a sweet egg mixture for the Perfect French Toast.

In anticipation of Mother’s Day, we asked staffers in Food Network Kitchen to share favorite recipes from their mothers (and grandmothers, too). Their personal picks ranged from classic Chocolate Pudding and creamy Cheesecake to bright Vietnamese Chicken Salad and hearty Pasta e Fagioli, all of which prompted us to clean our plates and politely ask for more during tastings in the test kitchen. One thing’s for sure: These moms raised some amazing cooks. Share one of their recipes with your mom this Mother’s Day, or get inspired by the staffers’ stories and treat her to a favorite dish from your own childhood.

This pudding, made with a mix of cocoa powder and semisweet chocolate, was a favorite childhood treat of Food Network test kitchen manager Claudia Sidoti, who says the dessert “makes me remember my mom and all the fun and nostalgia of my childhood in the 1960s and ’70s.”

Mother’s Day is just a few weeks away, and if you haven’t yet decided on a gift for Mom, there’s still time to commit to making her an extra-special meal at home. While holiday dinners carry with them a certain level of pressure, daytime get-togethers can be casual and relaxing, which makes Sunday brunch an ideal time to celebrate Mom. For a go-to brunch option that can feed a crowd, try making hearty quiche; it’s an egg-based main that’s often baked, so there’s no need to cook guests’ scrambles or over-easy eggs to order. Plus, quiche is endlessly versatile, as you can add nearly any cheese, vegetable or meat you happen to have on hand. 5. Mini Chorizo Quiches — Start with buttery crusts and fill them with a bold mixture of chorizo, Manchego, potatoes and eggs to create individual servings of Marcela’s Mexican-inspired quiche.

Even though Mother’s Day is just a few hours away and you may not have bought the devoted mom in your life a worthy present yet, there’s indeed time left to gift her something from the heart, a present that she’ll surely appreciate. Instead of resorting to a bouquet of flowers from the local bodega, gather your kids in the kitchen and commit to making Mom an extra-special Mother’s Day dessert. While there’s a time and a place for fancy, intricate sweets, Mother’s Day isn’t it, especially if they are to be prepared by little hands. Can-do desserts are the treats of choice instead — those that deliver tried-and-true results every time. A no-bake recipe that can be prepped in only 20 minutes, Food Network Kitchens’ Lemon Tiramisu Trifle (pictured above) relies on store-bought goodies like lemon curd and ladyfinger cookies to ensure that this dessert is a cinch to prepare. Once you and your kids have arranged the first half of the cookies in a dish, start layering them with lemon syrup, lemon cream and fresh berries. While the trifle is essentially done as is, it needs to chill for at least eight hours so that the flavors of the lemon, berries and cream marry and the ladyfingers become soft with syrup. This means that it’s best to make the dessert tonight or first thing tomorrow morning, so it will be ready to enjoy after dinner.
