On September 20, Food Network Magazine is throwing its first-ever concert — not just a music festival with a few food trucks on the side, but a full-blown food and music event with big stars from both worlds. Food Network stars are joining forces with more than 50 of the area’s greatest chefs for cooking demos, meet-and-greet opportunities and the ultimate tasting event, and seven-time Grammy Award winner John Mayer will take center stage to round out a full day of great food and music. It’s all happening at Ravinia, a picturesque outdoor venue in Highland Park, Ill.
Sunny Anderson, Anne Burrell, Jose Garces, Alex Guarnaschelli, Jeff Mauro, Marc Murphy and Geoffrey Zakarian will all be at Food Network in Concert. Double-layer frosted confections may be a party favorite, but the beauty of cakes is that they can take countless shapes and sizes. On today’s all-new episode of The Kitchen, Martha Stewart dropped by to introduce one of her latest publications, Martha Stewart’s Cakes: Our First-Ever Book of Bundts, Loaves, Layers, Coffee Cakes, and More, which is dedicated to both classic and creative desserts.
The co-hosts inducted Martha into Cookbook Club, and together she and Jeff Mauro created an updated version of the traditional icebox cake. Her Chocolate Chip Cookie Icebox Cake is an easy yet impressive dessert, boasting layer after layer of decadent chocolate cookies and sweet, fluffy cream. After chilling overnight in the refrigerator, the cookies will have absorbed moisture from the cream and become deliciously tender, so the cake will hold its shape when cut into slices.

Together with Sunny Anderson, Haylie prepped two savory bites, Bacon-Wrapped Dates and Mushroom and Herb Crostini, which take the hassle out of entertaining, thanks to fuss-free preparation.

For the first time ever, Food Network Magazine organized their favorite recipes from the year into one cookbook. Best Recipes 2014 is a compilation of the best weeknight dinners as chosen by the Food Network Test Kitchen and the magazine’s editors. But it was no easy task: When asked to choose her favorite, the head of the test kitchen, Katherine Alford, said, “They’re my children — I can’t pick one.”

For the first time on Saturday’s brand-new episode of The Kitchen (airing Saturdays at 11am/10c), the co-hosts introduced fans to what will become a regular segment on the show — Cookbook Club — wherein they welcome a cookbook author to the set to check out his or her recipes and even taste some of the book’s most-tempting dishes.
Pastry chef Jenny McCoy kicked it off this week with her publication, Desserts for Every Season, a sweet-tooth-satisfying collection of easy-to-make treats. While the book boasts recipes that are grouped by seasonal ingredients and flavors, Jenny says that each how-to is approachable enough that you can swap out the fruit featured in one season’s dish for something else — whatever happens to be the freshest when you’re making it. She and Katie wasted no time in cooking up one of the book’s most-decadent recipes, Chocolate-Dried Cherry Bread Pudding — a warm, gooey dessert made with milk chocolate, a bit of orange zest and some chewy dried cherries.
