When Buffalo chicken wings hit the snack table on football Sunday, it’s game over. No other snack food can compete — no matter how cheesy or spicy it is. The focus shifts from the TV to the saucy grub as each guest reaches to get his or her fair share (or more).
The sauce, traditionally made with a mixture of butter and hot sauce, is the reason the wings are so irresistible. And while it makes an awesome coating for baked or fried chicken, there’s no limit to where you can apply that beloved flavor combination. Even vegetables taste great dressed in the tangy mixture. Below are some new takes on Buffalo-style snacks that’ll give traditional wings a run for their money.

On Sundays, it can be hard not to undo your week’s worth of healthy eating. But Buffalo cauliflower will make it easier. With a fraction of the calories and fat, it’s a good and satisfying alternative that won’t make you feel like you’re missing out.

March Madness is officially upon us. With round two of the games starting tomorrow, brackets are being finalized. Watching the games at the bar can be, well, madness. Crowded and rowdy with passionate (and loud) sports fan, bars are fun but overwhelming — an experience better left to students with their school pride on the line. Instead of pushing your way up to the bar for an expensive pint, gather your buddies for a viewing party at your place. It guarantees you a comfy seat on the couch, and it’s a total game changer in terms of snacking — soggy nachos and flavorless wings are disqualified.
Here are seven better-than-bar-food snacks to make for the big tournament:
University of Kentucky is entering the tournament undefeated. Honor the team’s success with a Southern snack staple: pimento cheese. Whether or not you’re a fan of the Wildcats, this spicy cheese spread (fittingly nicknamed Southern caviar) is winning grub for everyone — bitter Arkansas Razorback fans included. Follow Sunny Anderson’s recipe (pictured above), then serve it with bread for a ridiculously easy snack.

Many of us have been amped up for Sunday’s game since the day football season began. But if you don’t eat, breathe and play football, chances are the big game snuck up on you. Have no fear! Instead of fumbling an opportunity to eat guacamole and drink beer on a Sunday night, throw together a last-minute viewing party spread with a little football-inspired rushing. This lineup of big-game bites may look sprawling, but each recipe can hit the coffee table in under 30 minutes.
The Neelys’ Triple Pork Sliders have the look of big effort in a small package, but they can actually be ready in a little over 20 minutes with the help of your grill pan. With a meaty mix of ground pork, chorizo and applewood smoked bacon, these sliders pack huge flavor in each mini patty. There’s no better way to celebrate the playoffs and the final countdown until the big Sunday game than with your favorite team’s colors — in cupcake form, of course. Whether you’re rooting for NFC leaders the Philadelphia Eagles (back and steel blue) or the AFC New England Patriots (red and dark blue), all you need is a few drops of food coloring to turn your desserts into game-day-ready treats. No matter whom you’re rooting for, you can show your team spirit with frosting.

The Southeastern Conference is home to some of the best college football in the country, and with it, some of the most-fervent fans and most-passionate tailgating. Football in the South is a bit like religion. People get really worked up; I mean really worked up. And, to that end, tailgating in the South is extreme as well. At the University of Alabama, fans are allowed to start tailgate setup at 6 p.m. the Thursday before the Saturday game — and dismantled as late as noon the day after! At my alma mater, the University of Georgia, there is Bulldog Park; a luxury RV tailgating facility offers the owners access to a wide range of amenities plus game-day shuttles to the stadium! Foodwise, there’s everything from LSU, where folks have big pots of meaty gumbo bubbling on a propane cooker, to The Grove at Ole Miss, where folks are super-fancy and serve dishes of hors d’oeuvres that you might be more accustomed to seeing at a ladies’ luncheon. (The real reason the food is so ladylike is that there’s a limited amount of electricity, and open flames and propane are prohibited — something that might not be a bad idea, considering the amount of alcohol consumed while tailgating!)
Personally, I prefer less work when I get to the stadium, and I suggest slow-cooked dishes prepared ahead of time. The best dishes are those you can cook at home and then add the finishing touches to at the stadium. I think the perfect tailgate food just might be chili. It works well in the fall, because it’s hearty and warms you up in the cool weather. Read more
