Burger Bash 2013 Winners: Bobby Flay and Jeff Mauro

It was a just a matter of time until Michael Symon’s three-time People’s Choice-winning streak was broken. And no one wanted to claim that victory more than Bobby Flay. For years, Rachael Ray has said that Michael has taken the win, but with Bobby just a few short votes shy (sometimes just one or two).

Last year Bobby told FN Dish that he’d rather come in tenth place, than be second to Michael once more. “He only wins because of his laugh,” Bobby jokingly told FN Dish last night. He continued to say that if he didn’t win this year, he might just hang his hat up. No need for that. Even though Bobby was up against 33 other burgers, his Green Chile Burger, crunchified of course, was the ultimate combination of savory, salty and fatty.

What’s the secret to this winning burger? “We let Michael Symon win three years in a row. This year we broke out the roasted poblano chiles. Game over everybody,” proclaimed Bobby.

The fifth annual New York City Wine & Food Festival officially kicked off Thursday night with Meatball Madness, followed up by a second hearty course at Burger Bash on Friday. Click play on the video above as FN Dish gets the answer straight from Bobby Flay, Alex Guarnaschelli, Geoffrey Zakarian, Anne Burrell, Jeff Mauro, Amanda Freitag, Aarón Sánchez, Marcus Samuelsson, Chris Santos and the Neelys.

The Great Googa Mooga Sets a New Standard for Festival Food

by in Events, May 20th, 2012

The Great Googa Mooga. Googa what? That was my exact reaction when I heard the name for the first ever “amusement park of food and drink” that is taking place this weekend at Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band, The Roots, Fitz & the Tantrums and Hall and Oates. These names are enough to draw in thousands of people to the newest food and music festival added to the roster of so many, but a first for New York City.

However, the true stars this weekend and what I believe was the biggest draw were the 75 food vendors, 35 brewers and 30 winemakers that dished out food ranging from barbecue to burgers, pizza and seafood and pastrami and ice cream. If you were craving it, you could buy it. While you might have to wait in multiple 30 minute lines, it was worth it — the food produced at this festival set a new standard for all festival food.

We spoke with organizer Jonathan Mayers, who launched Bonaroo and he said, “It’s time for food to get top billing.” He did just that. Included in those 75 food vendors were restaurants Spotted Pig, Roberta’s Pizza, Momofuku Milk Bar and Hill Country Barbecue. Special guests, demonstrators and chefs also included were Food Network’s own Michael Symon, Pat LaFrieda, Marcus Samuelsson, Anthony Bourdain, David Chang, Ruth Reichl and even Parks and Recreation’s Aziz Ansari. Miami in February — it doesn’t get much better than that. For four sunny days, Food Network and Cooking Channel personalities traveled from far and wide for a cause: to raise money for FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Now in its eleventh year, this has been the focus of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, which brings together the best of the best and celebrates food and drink in its finest forms: barbecue, burgers, desserts, wine and so much more.

We caught up with Alex, Bobby, Michael, Guy, Sunny, Jeff, Marc, Geoffrey, Melissa, Anne and Nadia G. to talk about the festival, the events they were participating in and we even caught them doing a little smack-talking.

The Best Midnight Munchies From The Best Thing I Ever Ate

If fans are looking for a chance to enjoy a glass of wine (hint, how about Food Network’s entwine) and meet some of their favorite Food Network and Cooking Channel stars, The Best Thing I Ever Ate at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival is for them. It’s one of the few events where the stars don’t have to cook. Instead, the chefs showcase a dish from one of their favorite restaurants in Miami or New York and a band keeps the crowd dancing until 2 am — that’s right, this is a late-night party.

Chefs presenting their favorite dishes included Alex Guarnaschelli, Sunny Anderson, Anne Burrell, Melissa d’Arabian, Geoffrey Zakarian, Aarón Sanchez and Nadia G.

Since I was at this event so late at night, I had to ask, “What’s the best midnight munchie you’ve ever had?” Some of the answers left me speechless (watch the video above for real-time reactions):

Alex Guarnaschelli: “It’s a toss-up between a super-spicy fish taco, a hot dog with deep-fried bacon on it or a whole cake of any flavor — but it would have to be layered.”

Burger Bash 2012: A Three-Peat Win, Some Friendly Trash-Talking and 32 Juicy Burgers

by in Events, February 25th, 2012

“Burger Bash is where it’s at,” Michael Symon said as we started our interview. It’s arguably the most sought after-ticket at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, drawing in crowds by the hundreds. Food writers, bloggers and burger enthusiasts travel from far and wide to watch their favorite chefs vie for the title of Best Burger. (And eat them, of course.)

Last year, event sponsors Allen Brothers provided each of the 26 vendors with meat; this year, they increased that number to 32 — that’s right, 32 burgers (see the full list here).

There are three awards to be had for the night: People’s Choice, Judges’ Favorite and the Heinz Best-Dressed Burger Award. While they are all coveted, there is one in particular that each chef has their eye on: The People’s Choice — the award where the guests get to choose their favorite. How do they vote? As you enter the tent, everyone receives one token. Next to each of the chefs’ booths is a box. Once you pick a favorite burger, you drop your token into the box.

The Q Kicks Off SOBE Wine & Food 2012

In a tent full of bright lights, loud music and some of the country’s best barbecue, chefs like Chris Lilly, Tim Love and Elizabeth Karmel joined The Q, formally known as BubbleQ, to kick off the 2012 South Beach Wine & Food Festival last night. With the air smelling of sweet and smoky barbecue sauces and spices, the event featured chefs’ signature dishes cooked on grills and smokers, and was hosted by Emeril Lagasse and Food Network’s Guy Fieri.

When people think of barbecue, the usual comes to mind: chicken, steak, burgers, ribs and hot dogs. While they were all present, they were all reinvented classics. Pulled pork was transformed into tacos and egg rolls, lamb ribs were served instead of pork ribs and yellowtail even made an appearance.
