If he’d rather be outside and your home lacks outdoor space, then pack up the spread and take it to the park for a picnic. You’re guaranteed to win him over with a hearty main, a classic drink and an indulgent dessert. Find out how to put a picnic-friendly spin on some timeless recipes that Dad is sure to love.
Barbecue Pulled Pork (pictured above)
Spending Father’s Day in a hot kitchen is no picnic, so choose a main dish that’s quick and easy. This aromatic batch of pulled pork requires only 20 minutes of prep work, and your Dutch oven (or slow cooker) will take care of the rest. Treat the pork to a variety of sweet and spicy seasonings, like brown sugar and chili powder, then let it cook up in a flavorful bath of chicken broth and tangy apple cider vinegar. When building the sandwiches, throw in a crunchy element by topping each with Dad’s favorite slaw.

Just as your dad has his favorite dish, so do the dads of Food Network. This Father’s Day, in lieu of the standard wrapped-and-ribboned gift, treat Dad to a meaty, homemade dinner inspired by Tyler, Pat, Geoffrey, Bobby and more of your favorite chefs. Hey, if it’s good enough for these guys, odds are that your dad will dig it too.
A dry-aged, bone-in rib-eye steak is perhaps the most extravagant way to show Dad some love. Tyler Florence’s El Paseo Porterhouse Steak is broiled to give it a gorgeous crust without singeing it on the grill, and he lets it rest in a clarified-butter bath for extra decadence. Tip: Since it’s his day, let Dad have the honor of nibbling off the bone at the very end.

Saturday evening was meant to be our anniversary celebration. Philippe and I were planning on grilling outside with our four daughters, ending the evening with s’mores around the firepit and an exchange of traditionally themed gifts (steel for year 11; I went with beverage bins). The kids were upstairs showering after our (sandy) beach afternoon. I hummed along to the music the girls had put on the stereo, grabbed the long, skinny lighter and headed outside to start the barbecue. I opened the (steel!) hood and placed the lighter on the ignition burner, and through the grates small, beady eyes looked up at me. I froze. A grayish-brown puff starting running wild around the inside of the grill, searching for an exit, making tiny scratching sounds that gave me the chills and basically made me want to scream. I didn’t, but only because I now I have kids and I can’t scare them. (This never-let-them-see-you-sweat instinct to put their needs before my own comes from parenting.)
I hollered upstairs to Philippe, doing my best to convey a sense of calm and confidence while infusing just enough controlled urgency so that he would run downstairs and catch the mouse before it ran into the house. (I think it’s understood that I didn’t close the back doors when I raced into the house?) But kids are smart and know when something’s up. They raced downstairs even faster than Philippe, screaming in half-fear, half-delight at the possibility of a mouse-in-house crisis. There was talk of keeping him and naming him Snowflake. (Did I mention he was dingy brownish gray?) Or maybe Cuddles. The girls jumped up on the couch, squealing out of fear that the mouse would run over their feet.

You probably know Marc Forgione for his five restaurants, cookbook and Iron Chef title, but did you know that his father was a culinary star long before Marc’s lustrous career? Known as the “Godfather of American Cuisine,” Larry Forgione was one of the first chefs to embrace “farm to table” cooking. He now serves as a director at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St. Helena, Calif. and continues to influence Marc in the kitchen.

What kinds of Father’s Day traditions do you have now and did you have as a child?
Geoffrey Zakarian: Well, not surprisingly, all centered around food. Usually we tried to go to a Red Sox game at Fenway, and if not, we would watch and chow down on simply grilled hot dogs. Delicious!
How will you and your family celebrate this year?
GZ: We are all going to our family’s place in upstate New York. A large buffet will be developed over the weekend and it will be an eat-a-thon. Lots of rosé will be poured.

While some families craft extensive plans and elaborate surprises to honor their dads on Father’s Day, the scene at the Yearwood-Brooks home will be far more low-key tomorrow. For Trisha, her husband, Garth, and his three daughters, there will be just one item on the agenda: spend time together enjoying some of Dad’s most-treasured treats.
“As long as his girls are all three in the same place, that’s huge,” Trisha told FN Dish of Garth when we caught up with her last month. “Now we have two [daughters] in college and one in high school, so getting everybody together is harder.” When the family is finally under one roof, especially at a time like this weekend, quality time is of the utmost importance. “Father’s Day really is just whatever Dad wants to do, and it always means he wants to have his girls there, so it’s always just something with them,” Trisha says of how they’ll be celebrating tomorrow.
