If We Build It, They Will Come.

In promos, sometimes our chefs share the spotlight with surprising co-stars: the graphics. The Viva Daisy! spot is no exception, as we’re hoping you’ve already seen on-air. I casually stalked Senior Designer Christopher Clarke and Writer/Producer Steve Tardio paparazzi-style from start to finish as they collaborated and created this promotional piece. Now I am excited to share my roomy front-row seat with you…

steve-and-christopherChristopher and Steve first brainstorm graphics ideas while reading over the script. The overall concept they developed highlights Daisy’s “spice” and “flourish” through the dynamic movement of the camera, as it twists and turns through Daisy’s world. Christopher creates the graphics portion of the promo, and Steve pulls show footage from Viva Daisy! to incorporate into the spot.

Behind the Scenes with Daisy

by in View All Posts, June 1st, 2009

We are all the buzz about Daisy Martinez’s “In The Kitchen” show, Viva Daisy. Right now in my department, Creative Services, we are all busy working on promoting the next season.

I literally just sat in on a brainstorming session with the producer and designer of the launch spot (a promo that lets you know when the new season is going to air and highlights the overall season with copy writing and footage) for the new season, as they discussed (top secret) ideas for the new spot. More to come on that later…

I was lucky enough to tag along with (Michael) Feimster on my first show shoot in the studios here in Chelsea. As you remember from Feimster’s first appearance on The FN Dish, he is tasked with shooting behind the scenes on all of our shows. We then use that footage to promote the shows and talent. So who knows, maybe some of the below footage we shot on Daisy’s set will finally get its day in the sun? From Feimster’s camera, to my amateur editing skills, to you:

The Rule when Visiting a Chef’s House

by in View All Posts, May 12th, 2009

Do not, I repeat, do NOT eat before going to Daisy Martinez‘s home. On Friday we went to Daisy’s house to shoot an upcoming FN Dish video, Meet Daisy, for her new round of Viva Daisy! episodes. Within minutes of arriving to her house, Daisy had food in our bellies, and lots of it!

We literally had just put down our film equipment when she kindly lured us into her kitchen, telling us that she was in the midst of testing recipes for her new cookbook. When we told her that we’d eaten lunch before coming over, Daisy made this adorable face (left) and exclaimed, “Don’t you know you’re not supposed to eat before coming over to my house?” Listen….when a chef says, “try my food and tell me what you think,” I’m always a willing participant! Needless to say, I made room in my stomach.

The Rumors Are True…

by in View All Posts, April 21st, 2009

Yes, I am here to tell you that Food Network WILL, in fact, be premiering an entire series with Brian Boitano this August.

Yes, Brian Boitano the figure skater.

Yes, THIS Brian Boitano:

The series is tentatively titled, What Would Brian Boitano Make? You may be thinking to yourself, “that sounds vaguely familiar…” And, I’m here to confirm that YES, the inspiration came from the famous South Park song, “What Would Brian Bointano Do?” (There is no official confirmation yet, but I’m pretty sure there will be less cursing from the Food Network version.) Here’s the description from our programming department:

WHAT WOULD BRIAN BOITANO MAKE?
Everyone knows Brian Boitano won an Olympic gold medal in figure skating. What they don’t know: Brian is an accomplished cook who loves to entertain! In this new series, Brian takes viewers on a reality cooking adventure as he creates amazing food for a new event in each episode. Funny, knowledgeable and irresistible, Brian brings himself and so much more to What Would Brian Boitano Make?

And now that I have your full attention (and in some cases, full confusion), check out the rest of the 2009-2010 Food Network line-up that was announced just this afternoon:

CHEFS VS CITY (WT)
Premieres: July 2009
Acclaimed chefs Chris Cosentino and Aaron Sanchez are pitted against two local foodies in a winner-takes-all race through a different city each week, through the most fascinating, unusual food locations. Each team begins with a clue leading them to their first food challenge. Challenges could include everything from wine stomping to the eating the spiciest chili west of the Mississippi to diving for sea urchins! The five challenges take the chefs and foodies on an adrenaline-charged, food-lovers tour of each city, and once complete, it’s a sprint to the finish line to see if the locals can protect their home turf or if the Food Network chefs can conquer a new city.

EXTREME CUISINE WITH JEFF CORWIN
Premieres: September 2009
Renowned for his expertise in wildlife and conservation, Jeff Corwin sets his sights on exploring human culture through regional cuisine in his first Food Network endeavor: Extreme Cuisine with Jeff Corwin. With an open mind (and mouth), this thrilling primetime series follows the passionate foodie and anthropologist as he tears through countries like Thailand, Mexico, Greece, and Peru on radical culinary adventures. Learning from the natives, he samples the exotic foods and local customs that mold each community. Jeff enjoys countless surprises and unforgettable flavors during this fun-filled culinary quest – all in a day’s work!

Hello, FN Dishers!

So, I always thought I’d spot my dream home while flipping through Better Home and Gardens. Imagine my shock when I came across it last week on a trip “to get the mail” (wink, wink). I just happened to stumble onto the new Viva Daisy! set. Oops!

Shows & Gardens Galore!

by in View All Posts, March 31st, 2009

This past week has been super busy for not only FN’s Studio A, but also a few outside shoots, as well!

The Big Bite personality that is Guy Fieri has been cooking up a storm with some of his closest friends (hint – there are TONS of special guests in the upcoming episodes of Guy’s Big Bite). But not only that, Tyler Florence is back with another special, and it’s all about burgers coming in May! And this past Saturday, I got to hang out with Daisy Martinez of Viva Daisy. We shot around the Union Square Green Market and a few amazing locations in Jackson Heights, Queens (not too far from where I live!). One of the most classic moments happened at Daisy’s shoot when Mario Batali walked right pass all of us – we weren’t rolling at that moment, but it was still pretty hilarious.

Now that you’re caught up with whats been keeping our cameras busy, here’s an update on my little garden! While fairly upset that I had no sprouts last week, I started dreading the idea of only having 2 large pots of dirt on my desk. My friend Jon built me a shelf which lifted my spirits, but still, no sprouts… just bowls of dirt. And then it happened!!! This morning I came in to find some green stems popping their little heads out of the soil – BASIL! (Thankfully my little garden at home is strong, green and beautiful!)

Until next week – Cheers!
