On Saturday morning, Paula and entertaining guru James Farmer show you some easy and delicious entertaining recipes. In the evening it’s competition time beginning with Cupcake Wars, where the bakers are competing for a chance to serve at the People’s Choice Awards. This weekend on Food Network it’s all about cooking and having fun with family and friends, and some friendly — and not-so-friendly — competition.
Saturday morning has all-new episodes from Ree, Ina and Giada. On The Pioneer Woman, Ree is cooking up a storm for her football-playing family as they prepare for a game of boys versus girls. Then on Barefoot Contessa, Ina’s rewarding the team that helped design and build her new library with a Mediterranean-style party. Afterward, Giada and her aunt Raffy are cooking recipes right out of Giada’s grandma’s recipe collection on Giada at Home.
The competition starts on Sunday with a new episode of Cupcake Wars, where the teams bake it out for a chance to cater an event for The All-American Rejects. On Worst Cooks in America, the remaining Boot Campers must try and beat the clock to see if they can cook faster than ordering in delivery. Then, on a special night, watch Restaurant: Impossible as Robert tries to unite three brothers who have had a hard time running their late mother’s Italian restaurant (pictured above).

This weekend Food Network has a bunch of competition shows that show off the competitors’ extreme creativity. But first, learn how to put together dinner in a hurry, which also requires some creative thinking on the fly.
If you’ve ever been stuck in a situation with unexpected guests coming over for dinner, you know it’s tough to pull off a meal in such a limited amount of time. But on The Pioneer Woman, Ree can show you how she cooks up an entire meal with just a phone call’s notice.
This weekend the competition shows get innovative. On Sugar Dome, the teams must create food art inspired by the deep sea. On Cupcake Wars, four bakers are fighting for the chance to cater an event at the San Diego Zoo. The remaining recruits on Worst Cooks in America must train their palates and prove to Chefs Anne and Bobby that they can create unique flavor combinations from what they’ve learned. Then Chef Bobby Flay goes to battle on Iron Chef America against Chef Hong Thaimee.

Cupcake Wars judge Candace Nelson is the founder and pastry chef of Sprinkles Cupcakes, the world’s first cupcake bakery. She joins us on the FN Dish each week to recap all the sweet details of the competition from her seat at the judges’ table. Here’s what she had to say about this week’s episode.
This week’s Cupcake Wars was a heated competition as our bakers fought to have their cupcakes showcased at the US Open of Surfing. Round one transported us to the birthplace of surfing, Hawaii, complete with unique tastes of the islands. All contestants worked with either canned ham or tuna — a risky proposition and difficult to master. Shannon’s slider cupcake was interesting, but missed the mark with its mushy, taro-root frosting. Stephanie’s coconut lime cupcake was soggy with infused pineapple juice — I needed a wetsuit just to handle it.

What a thrill it was to have world champion poker player Annie Duke as a guest judge this week. She is one smart lady — and a cupcake lover, to boot. In round one, the contestants were dealt the same hand of ingredients, but each team ended up with very different results. Tina’s black truffle “gamble” paid off for the most part, although the black truffle flavor was a bit lacking. Robin and Patric both used the same flavors of strawberry, balsamic and cheese. Robin’s cupcake lacked mascarpone flavor and though I loved Patric’s creation, Florian was not a fan of the watery strawberries, which he believed would quickly result in a soggy cupcake. Sandy ultimately had to go.

In round one of Cupcake Wars ESPYs episode, we saw cupcakes packed with power foods like almonds, blueberries and even spinach, but Florian and I weren’t feeling too energized by the bakers’ efforts. Therese and Desi were too heavy-handed with the orange and almond flavors, and Rachel’s cupcakes were just plain raw. When your cupcake texture is described as “wet,” it’s not a good thing.
