Brunch and Jazz With Paula Deen

by in Events, October 3rd, 2011

It was a brunch buffet fit for an army and an army of Paula Deen fans did indeed turn out for her Sunday Jazz Brunch at Gotham Hall in New York City.  From her own Eggs Benedict to delicious dishes from guest chefs, there wasn’t an empty plate in the place. Paula, her sons and her husband addressed the large crowd and thanked them numerous times for their support of the Food Bank of New York City and Share Our Strength: “I appreciate so much y’alls support and helping solve this big problem we have in America…you’ll never realize what it means to me.”

Looking for the ultimate breakfast or brunch recipe for this weekend? Look no further. Boring hash browns are woken up by grating an onion and adding it to a skillet with the potatoes. After they’ve crisped up, add cheddar cheese to the top along with two eggs. After the eggs have set, top it with your choice of mild, medium or hot salsa.

Donatella Does Brunch: Hangover Pizza, Anyone?

by in Holidays, Shows, December 13th, 2010

After slinging Neapolitan-style pies at lunch and dinner for the past couple of months, Donatella Arpaia’s eponymously named New York pizzeria rolled out a brunch menu this past weekend.

2010 has been a big year for Donatella—she opened this very personal addition to her restaurant mini-empire, served on the judges’ panel for The Next Iron Chef Season 3 and on several episodes of Iron Chef America, and published her first cookbook, Donatella Cooks. We’d be surprised if the lawyer-turned-restaurateur ever sits still long enough for a lazy brunch, but she clearly gets what it’s all about. Her sunny pizzeria is perfectly suited for relaxing mid-day repasts and the menu is full of carby comfort.

Take the Hangover Pizza. Donatella’s executive chef, Jarett Appell, came up with it when he was making himself some food after a night of, well, too much of the obvious. The blistered crust is topped with breakfast sausage, an egg, and thin, melting slices of cured lardo (pork fat). The whole thing is oozy, decadent, satisfying—a delicious interpretation of the classic breakfast plate. The boss told Jarett to run with it on the brunch menu.

NYWFF: Sunday Brunching with Paula

Paula welcomes fans at the Plaza

Hey y’all, Paula was at the festival too! Ms. Deen brought some Southern hospitality to NYC with a Sunday Gospel Brunch at the iconic Plaza Hotel. Naturally, Paula made sure that the spread at this classy affair was still totally over-the-top.

Paula's mac-and-cheese

Guests were treated to a buffet stocked with dozens of sweet and savory dishes, but the crowd favorite seemed to be Paula’s classic mac-and-cheese. We’re not sure which recipe she used, as she has several, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them: Try Paula’s Creamy Macaroni and Cheese or The Lady’s Cheesy Mac.
