From Food to Football: Guy Fieri to Compete in Celebrity Beach Bowl

Guy FieriYou know him as the blond, blinged-out host of Triple D and one of two culinary mentors on Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off, but this weekend Guy Fieri is putting his kitchen chops aside to show off his skills on a sandy football field. Along with such famous faces as actors Tracy Morgan and Chace Crawford, personalities Kevin Frazier and Artie Lange, and model Hannah Davis, Guy will compete in DIRECTV’s Celebrity Beach Bowl in New York City ahead of Sunday’s big game. Every year the biggest names in entertainment join forces with top-notch athletes in a friendly flag football game, and this Saturday the game will prove greater than ever as NFL Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Deion Sanders and Warren Moon join the superstar roster.

The celebration kicks off Saturday at 10a|9c in Manhattan’s Hudson River Park at Pier 40 when DIRECTV hosts a tailgate for fans, then a pregame show starts at 1|12c, followed by the all-stars taking the field at 2|1c for the start of the game. Travel Channel’s Andrew Zimmern will be on hand to work the crowd during the halftime show at 2:30, and after the game at about 3:20|2:30c, Paramore take the stage to belt out their latest hits.

How to Make a Party-Ready Ice Ring for the Punch Bowl

Cosmopolitan Fizz PunchPunch is always a crowd-pleasing party drink, but keeping it chilled throughout the fun can be tricky. Individual ice cubes melt quickly and tend to water down the mix, while a large citrus-speckled ice mold stays frozen longer and imparts extra flavor to the punch. You can use any ring mold or Bundt pan to freeze the ice, which doubles as an eye-catching centerpiece. Get the party started by floating this ice ring in a big batch of Cosmopolitan Fizz Punch, which combines the cosmo — a favorite ’90s cocktail — with the classic ’50s ginger ale punch for a palate-pleasing mashup that will keep you cool as the game heats up.

Begin by layering lime and orange slices in a ring mold and scattering fresh (or frozen) cranberries in between. Then mix together 3/4 cup each cranberry juice, orange juice and water, and pour the liquid over the fruit. Freeze the ring mold until firm, about 6 hours.

What is your dream team matchup for the big game?
Sunny Anderson: I think my dream matchup … would be Jets versus Giants. Let’s just settle it. The Giants are better. Let’s just grudge-match settle it.

What will you be cooking for the big game this year?
SA: I’m cooking everything. Usually I do a smorgasbord of wings. So I like to just do, like, two or three wings. So it’s usually going to be the basics, which is like a good spicy wing — a Buffalo wing — and then I go crazy from there, so definitely my PB&J Wings, and then I’m in love with Sticky Onion Crunch Wings, another recipe that I just put together. And then just lots of, like, dips; I have a crab-avocado, guacamole-type thing. And then you’ve gotta have dessert, because to me, dessert is like what you serve when you’re ready for people to go home. It’s your cue to leave when the coffee and dessert comes out.

Sweet vs. Spicy Wings: Which Team Are You On?

Classic Hot WingsJust this morning on a brand-new episode of The Kitchen, co-hosts Sunny Anderson and Geoffrey Zakarian showed off a duo of recipes for the humble chicken wing. This game-day favorite is a blank canvas for almost all ingredients, but often one of two tastes ends up reigning supreme: spicy or sweet. While both Geoffrey and Sunny deep-fried their wings until the skin was deliciously crispy and the meat juicy, Geoffrey opted for a slightly spicy rendition with piquillo peppers and cumin in his BBQ Chicken Wings with Blue Cheese Butter, and Sunny celebrated the sweeter flavor of pomegranate juice and hoisin sauce in her Sticky Onion Crunch Wings. Both finished wings proved deliciously sticky, but Geoffrey’s featured smoky notes while Sunny’s were subtly sweet without losing their savory bite.

Cinnamon-Sugar Soft Pretzels — The New Girl

Cinnamon-Sugar Soft PretzelsI used to be indifferent to football. These days, however, you can find me sporting an Eli Manning jersey and checking stats for my Fantasy team. Perhaps dating a diehard Giants fan and living with two guys has influenced my change of heart. But really, I think it’s the food that won me over. There’s an unspoken rule that all food eaten on Sunday should be of the comfort food variety, and I’m OK with that. An excuse to eat nachos, wings and brownies? Count me in.

For a recent Sunday night game, I made cinnamon-sugar soft pretzels. Chewy, with a slight crunch from the buttery sugar coating, they tasted just like the famous ones that tempt you at malls and airports — and they smelled equally amazing. Even after a quarter filled with fumbles and turnovers, my frustrated friends couldn’t help but be giddy while my pretzels baked in the oven.
