This morning, The Kitchen co-hosts Geoffrey Zakarian, Jeff Mauro, Katie Lee, Marcela Valladolid and Sunny Anderson kicked off a brand-new second season of The Kitchen with an episode full of fresh springtime recipes and a special guest appearance. Just in time for the Easter holiday, they showcased holiday-worthy classics like hard-boiled eggs and seasonal-vegetable salads, and Food Network’s Marc Summers dropped by to dish on his upcoming series, Rewrapped. After a jam-packed hour, Geoffrey, in true 5 o’clock fashion, shook a signature cocktail, his GZ Gin Fizz.
Now it’s time for fans to partake in the celebration of Season 2 as well. FN Dish has a cutting board signed by all five members of the cast, and we’re giving it away to one lucky person. Amanda Rettke, FN Dish contributor and founder of the I Am Baker blog, is serving some of her most-beautiful confections yet in her first cookbook, Surprise-Inside Cakes. In Amanda’s book, there’s no such thing as an ordinary chocolate or vanilla cake with frosting (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Just like opening up a gift, the element of surprise is within each baked good, whether it be a heart, football, smiley face, stripe or house (yes, a house). Simply put, if you want to wow guests at your next gathering, make one of Amanda’s cakes.
What caught FN Dish’s eye? The entire book. Each page is more colorful than the one before, and there’s a surprise-inside design for every occasion: celebrating holidays, family, love and life events (like moving to a new home). Have a cake recipe you’ve perfected? Great. Because Amanda encourages using tried-and-true recipes, but she’s provided a few of her favorites too.
At first glance some of the cakes may seem like a challenge, but Amanda’s included step-by-step photos and instructions for each one. And be wise: Don’t start out with the most difficult design!

On today’s all-new episode of The Kitchen, Martha Stewart dropped by to introduce one of her latest publications, Martha Stewart’s Cakes: Our First-Ever Book of Bundts, Loaves, Layers, Coffee Cakes, and More, which is dedicated to both classic and creative desserts.
The co-hosts inducted Martha into Cookbook Club, and together she and Jeff Mauro created an updated version of the traditional icebox cake. Her Chocolate Chip Cookie Icebox Cake is an easy yet impressive dessert, boasting layer after layer of decadent chocolate cookies and sweet, fluffy cream. After chilling overnight in the refrigerator, the cookies will have absorbed moisture from the cream and become deliciously tender, so the cake will hold its shape when cut into slices.

Together with Sunny Anderson, Haylie prepped two savory bites, Bacon-Wrapped Dates and Mushroom and Herb Crostini, which take the hassle out of entertaining, thanks to fuss-free preparation.

For the first time ever, Food Network Magazine organized their favorite recipes from the year into one cookbook. Best Recipes 2014 is a compilation of the best weeknight dinners as chosen by the Food Network Test Kitchen and the magazine’s editors. But it was no easy task: When asked to choose her favorite, the head of the test kitchen, Katherine Alford, said, “They’re my children — I can’t pick one.”

Together with Marcela, Kelsey showed off one recipe from her book: Sloppy Jane Sliders. This big-batch supper is a go-to pick for families, boasting tender turkey, fresh vegetables and homemade sloppy joe sauce.

For the first time on Saturday’s brand-new episode of The Kitchen (airing Saturdays at 11am/10c), the co-hosts introduced fans to what will become a regular segment on the show — Cookbook Club — wherein they welcome a cookbook author to the set to check out his or her recipes and even taste some of the book’s most-tempting dishes.
Pastry chef Jenny McCoy kicked it off this week with her publication, Desserts for Every Season, a sweet-tooth-satisfying collection of easy-to-make treats. While the book boasts recipes that are grouped by seasonal ingredients and flavors, Jenny says that each how-to is approachable enough that you can swap out the fruit featured in one season’s dish for something else — whatever happens to be the freshest when you’re making it. She and Katie wasted no time in cooking up one of the book’s most-decadent recipes, Chocolate-Dried Cherry Bread Pudding — a warm, gooey dessert made with milk chocolate, a bit of orange zest and some chewy dried cherries.
