On September 20, Food Network Magazine is throwing its first-ever concert — not just a music festival with a few food trucks on the side, but a full-blown food and music event with big stars from both worlds. Food Network stars are joining forces with more than 50 of the area’s greatest chefs for cooking demos, meet-and-greet opportunities and the ultimate tasting event, and seven-time Grammy Award winner John Mayer will take center stage to round out a full day of great food and music. It’s all happening at Ravinia, a picturesque outdoor venue in Highland Park, Ill.
Sunny Anderson, Anne Burrell, Jose Garces, Alex Guarnaschelli, Jeff Mauro, Marc Murphy and Geoffrey Zakarian will all be at Food Network in Concert. For a chance to win a pair of tickets (travel is not included), comment below and tell FN Dish which dish you hope one of these Food Network chefs will make for the event. Or head over to the official website to get your tickets before they sell out. The event will benefit Share Our Strength and their No Kid Hungry campaign — dedicated to ending childhood hunger in America by ensuring all children get the healthy food they need every day.

Lee Brian Schrager, founder of the Food Network South Beach and New York City Wine and Food Festivals, knows a thing or two about fried chicken. Along with co-author Adeena Sussman, a chef and food writer, he has left no stone unturned while traveling around America to unearth the most decadently delicious fried chicken recipes for his new book – ‘Fried & True: More Than 50 Recipes for America’s Best Fried Chicken and Sides’.
From classic dishes like Tyler Florence’s Fried Chicken and Velvety Mashed Potatoes to Asian-inspired twists like Dale Talde’s Kung Pao Chicken Wings, this book has a variation for every taste bud. And, of course, you can’t forget the sides. With more than 25 side dishes, recipes include melt-in-your-mouth buttermilk biscuits, cheesy garlic grits and cardamom waffles. Finally, to make sure you have your basics right, the cookbook begins with a lesson on kitchen chopping, cooking time, and fats and oils.
The book also includes a foreword by none other than Whoopi Goldberg, who will once again host Schrager’s Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival Chicken Coupe event this fall.

FN Dish contributor Marisa McClellan is known for her Friday posts, The Weekender. But what Marisa is truly known for is her expertise on preserving. Her first book, Food in Jars, was a quick hit. Now Marisa is back for a second helping, this time for those in small spaces in Preserving by the Pint.
In her second cookbook, Marisa guides readers through making smaller batches from farmers markets, produce stands or their local grocery stores. Some people just aren’t space-equipped for working with quarts or pounds. Readers will find recipes organized by season, such as Rosemary Rhubarb Jelly, Whole Strawberries in Vanilla Syrup, Sweet Cherry Compote and Fig Jam with Thyme. Some recipes take just under an hour to prepare.

Whether it’s to post on Instagram, send in a text or share on a blog, people love to take pictures of their food. The deliciousness of the dish, however, doesn’t always come through in the actual photo. A mediocre photo can make a tasty and brag-worthy dish look average or even unappealing. Ree Drummond knows this firsthand.
Fans know Ree for her beautiful food photography, but when she first started her blog, The Pioneer Woman, in 2006, she had no previous experience using a camera. She shared her top tips for taking a good food photo with Food Network Magazine, along with some of her early shots to show home cooks what not to do.

Amanda Rettke, FN Dish contributor and founder of the I Am Baker blog, is serving some of her most-beautiful confections yet in her first cookbook, Surprise-Inside Cakes. In Amanda’s book, there’s no such thing as an ordinary chocolate or vanilla cake with frosting (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Just like opening up a gift, the element of surprise is within each baked good, whether it be a heart, football, smiley face, stripe or house (yes, a house). Simply put, if you want to wow guests at your next gathering, make one of Amanda’s cakes.
What caught FN Dish’s eye? The entire book. Each page is more colorful than the one before, and there’s a surprise-inside design for every occasion: celebrating holidays, family, love and life events (like moving to a new home). Have a cake recipe you’ve perfected? Great. Because Amanda encourages using tried-and-true recipes, but she’s provided a few of her favorites too.
At first glance some of the cakes may seem like a challenge, but Amanda’s included step-by-step photos and instructions for each one. And be wise: Don’t start out with the most difficult design!
You can buy a copy of Surprise-Inside Cakes here, or you can enter to win one for free from FN Dish. We’re giving five lucky, randomly selected readers each a copy, and all you have to do to enter to win one is leave a comment below telling us your favorite Food Network cake recipe. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone birthday, you’re recovering from a stressful week or you simply have a sweet tooth that won’t quit, cake-baking is nearly always a good idea, as the finished product delivers tried-and-true comfort every time. Double-layer frosted confections may be a party favorite, but the beauty of cakes is that they can take countless shapes and sizes. On today’s all-new episode of The Kitchen, Martha Stewart dropped by to introduce one of her latest publications, Martha Stewart’s Cakes: Our First-Ever Book of Bundts, Loaves, Layers, Coffee Cakes, and More, which is dedicated to both classic and creative desserts.
The co-hosts inducted Martha into Cookbook Club, and together she and Jeff Mauro created an updated version of the traditional icebox cake. Her Chocolate Chip Cookie Icebox Cake is an easy yet impressive dessert, boasting layer after layer of decadent chocolate cookies and sweet, fluffy cream. After chilling overnight in the refrigerator, the cookies will have absorbed moisture from the cream and become deliciously tender, so the cake will hold its shape when cut into slices.
Want to check out more of Martha Stewart’s Cakes? You can buy the book here, or you can enter to win a free signed copy from FN Dish. We’re giving away one cookbook each to four lucky, randomly selected fans. To enter, tell us in the comments which recipe from The Kitchen has been your favorite this season (you can find a complete list of recipes from The Kitchen here). You must include the recipe URL to be entered to win.
While some authors may pride themselves on publishing cookbooks filled with intricate multistep recipes and lavishly elegant meal ideas for special occasions, Haylie Duff is no such writer, releasing a brand-new work, The Real Girl’s Kitchen, that cooks of every caliber can conquer with ease.
She stopped by The Kitchen this morning to introduce this recent release — based on her blog of the same name — and chat with the co-hosts about some of her favorite go-to dishes that are every bit as easy to prepare as they are deliciously satisfying. Together with Sunny Anderson, Haylie prepped two savory bites, Bacon-Wrapped Dates and Mushroom and Herb Crostini, which take the hassle out of entertaining, thanks to fuss-free preparation.
