Something’s in the Water at Food Network

A blizzard may have hit the east coast, but it was all showers here at FN — baby showers. There are five (count them) FIVE women expecting here. To celebrate the imminent increasing of the FN family, pink and blue balloons, cuddly baby blankets and rubber duckies decorated our conference room. Of course, the stork-themed desserts stole this tablecloth’s show. Fun stuff.

We may have not had Ina’s full course meal or or Giada’s spring time shower fare but we did have an assortment of sugary treats, like home made cupcakes, courtesy of one multi talented production coordinator. Let me tell you these mommies-to-be may not perform in front of the camera, but they all have the culinary skills to do so. Take our Director of Product Management, Tracy Rubine, for example. Her cooking days are waning and energy is fading, but she did whip up this pork chop recipe the other night.
Tracy advises, “be careful not to overcook the pork” Got ya, Ms. Rubine. Another mama, Narisa Wild, our Director Website Product and Industry Development has been indulging lately in this yogurt and granola concoction from Tyler. Apparently, she has been leaning toward lighter and sweeter fare in the evening (digestion has been proving difficult due to her full tummy). Narisa also mentioned that you can do variations on this little delight – alternate fruits, dried fruits and even nuts to mix it up a bit, and says that “the yogurt can also be substituted for frozen yogurt or ice cream.” Yummy!

Well, the way I ate today, it looks as if I might be expecting. Perhaps, that will warrant a party?

Jeopardy

Cold pizza. Day old beef and broccoli. Its true, sometimes leftovers are just better than the original. So, today I’m suggesting that you check out this Jeopardy link. Granted it aired in early February, but I feel it is just as yummy as the actual airing date.

Anticipa-a-ation. How does the song go? That’s what I’m feeling today as I’m about to meet Sunny Anderson. Interesting, huh?

I’m nervous to meet the Comfort Food Queen. Particularly after I just watched her Burger and Cakes viewing parties.

Yippee. Yikes. What to wear? Should I bring a gift — her Grammy’s red velvet cake, perhaps? Oy vey. My attempt might prove to be offensive. I don’t want to pry, but of course I want the dish!

I’ve heard she has led a CRAZY life so far, which I can’t wait to share with you. To tide you over, check out Sunny’s cool personal site and blog for a quick taste.

Wish me luck on bringing out my inner Barbara Walters.

Secretary Confidential Goes Renegade & Light

The head honcho is traveling, so my latest spy mission wasn’t that covert. Without worrying about colleagues sneaking up behind me (forcing me to scramble for a work-related Internet window), I emailed my buddy and FN executive chef here at FN, Rob Bleifer for an interview. My FN inner fanatic soared midway through his email: “How about next week? Ellie Krieger is taping some web shows in the FN Kitchens right now.” Love. Ellie.

A brilliant idea came in the form of an interoffice envelope. I whipped up a label reading “Important for Rob Bliefer” and scurried to the kitchens. After a friendly hello from big-smiles guard Clarence, I slithered through the swinging door, towards Rob’s homey office. Cameras were rolling, lights were blazing and Ellie had spatula in hand.

She’s taping 12 shorts, called Healthy Meal Makeovers with Ellie Krieger. Don’t let the “healthy” term deter you. Ellie will be whipping up dishes like Better Beef Lasagna, Sesame Shrimp Fried Rice and an amazing veggie quiche. I hungrily watched the china-doll-esque chef create a healthy version of chicken pot pie….yummy. How the heck do you make chicken pot pie non-artery clogging? Ah…stay tuned. Think stir fry with down-home comfort. If only I could have snuck a taste…

Let Them Eat [Red Velvet] Cake!

That’s what we should call Sunny‘s episode “First Down, Ten to Feed”; airing on January 24th . Sunny’s baking her beloved Grandma’s red velvet cake. Yummy.

She’s a natural storyteller, and her tales are NOT scripted. As she spoke about her Grammy baking this cake for church or for her high school graduation, I thought she might cry. So sweet! Her approach is fun to contrast with Anne Burrell who talks of her recipes as if she were talking about her best girlfriends.

Sunny also embraces some cake curveballs like white vinegar or whipping up the icing on the stove. I don’t cook, but that seems unusual. Our dear Sunny can be prone to belches in the right conditions. That was kind of comical to watch. She burps between takes and is fine with this. A woman who is comfortable in her skin — I love that.

SC Previews Anne In Jan.

Today, I weaseled my way into one of the edit rooms. “Just pretend I’m not here,” I told editor and producer extraordinaires, Jim and Jenny. They’re working on Anne Burrell’s Secrets of a Restaurant Chef. No spoiler here, but come January 17th , you’re in for a treat. Chef Burrell’s grilled pizza episode is sizzling. No major gaffes, other than the overuse of “lovely,” and a few “ums,” which probably won’t make their way to your screens.

The color coordination—all pastels with pink spoon AND rolling pin — is so sweet; you’ll get a rush before she whips out the pizza dough. However, the girly décor doesn’t keep Anne from doing the tough stuff, like opening a bottle of oil with her teeth — or actually, removing the bottle wrapper (that part might get cut).

I dug for dirt on the snappy blonde from my new peeps. I learned about Anne’s sous chef, who’s on Top Chef now, and heard big praise for the steak recipe. Evidently, Anne’s brown sugar-coated steak is pleasing to carnivores and dessert-ivores alike. So nice — Jim’s made it twice.

Before I go, a shout out for Tyler. Saw you the other day in the elevator, Mr. Florence, bundled and sniffly. You’re a trooper!
