Flying High with Food Network Stars

Cat Cora, shown here in her home kitchen, will soon launch a quick service restaurant in the San Francisco airport.

SFGate is reporting that Tyler Florence and Cat Cora are soon to launch quick service eateries in SFO’s Terminal 2.  Chef Florence will bring a scaled down version of his Rotisserie and Wine restaurant. His menu will be offering roasted meats along with a variety of southern style side dishes. The Cat Cora Lounge will be a cocktail bar and the menu will offer fresh local seafood. The goal of the project is to support local and sustainable dining with a number of food offerings throughout the terminal, something never before seen at an airport.

Delaware North has partnered with Iron Chef Morimoto to launch a new restaurant in Los Angeles International Airport’s Terminal 5. The menu will consist of a selection of soups and salads as well as yakitori style skewers which will include meats and vegetables served with rice. The focus will be on tasty, healthy foods that can be served and eaten quickly.

Sandra Lee is launching a new line of kitchenware for Sears and Kmart. The collection will feature small appliances and other kitchen items.

The Baltimore Business Journal is reporting that Duff Goldman will be offering a line of less expensive cakes. Priced around $250, these cakes feed 12 to 15 and will be available much quicker than the more pricey custom designs which need to be ordered months in advance.

Guy Fieri gave a sneak peek on Twitter this week of a new “Knuckle Sandwich” shoe being designed by Globe Shoes. No word yet on when they will be available.

Paula is putting on a new show.

Savannah Now is reporting that the Lady & Sons has added dinner theater to the dining experience at Paula Deen’s restaurant. Diners can now enjoy Hard-Hearted Hannah’s Playhouse presentation of ‘There’s a Bomb on Trolley 409!’ while sampling some of Paula’s best dishes. The Lady & Sons has rented basement space for the production and a buffet will be provided before the performance begins. For now, Hard-Hearted Hannah’s has dates available through October, and more dates may be added later. Tickets are $55 per person, which includes the dinner buffet and the performance. Alton Brown brought large crowds to Dauphin Island for a gumbo cook-off this past weekend, serving as judge for the gumbo competition. The al.com blog reported record attendance for the event in an area bouncing back from the BP oil spill.  Alton is a big advocate for local and sustainable seafood. The event featured 21 different teams cooking variations of the dish competing for the best flavor in the seafood and freestyle categories.  Before giving out the awards, Alton declared that gumbo is “the hardest thing I’ve had to cook” and took then questions from the audience.

Food Network Stars Give Back

Many Food Network stars contribute to local causes as well as national charities close to their hearts. A few recent sightings…

This past weekend, Guy Fieri cooked with students from more than a dozen Chicago area schools to benefit the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program. The students worked with Guy preparing appetizers to be served at a reception. CCAP works with students across the country interested in pursuing a culinary career and offers scholarships, job training and internships.

Chef Giada DeLaurentiis is visiting schools in South Carolina to film an effort that’s bringing food to hungry children. Every Friday the Back the Pack program adds non perishable items to the backpacks of children who need food for their weekend at home. Educators in the area realized the need when many children would ask for seconds and wrap part of their meal to take home. Meetings with counselors and other school workers led to the discovery that one in 17 students leave school on Fridays without another full meal until they return on Monday. During her visit, Giada will tour a local school where children receive the packs and meet with high school students who participate in a warehouse distribution course where they pack and then ship the items to elementary and middle school students in the area.

Saturday, April 23rd Chef Duff Goldman will be in Richmond Kentucky for an event to benefit the Grace Now Food Pantry. The organization was started by a local church and provided 90,000 food items to about 1,100 families last year. The event will include a cake decorating competition for amateurs and professionals. Amateurs can compete in different categories, one for adults and two for youngsters, ages 17-13 and 12-6. Saturday night at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival food celebs and fans attended a party inspired by the popular FN show Best Thing I Ever Ate, with a little South Beach twist — “Best Thing I Ever Ate at the Beach” hosted by Duff Goldman. Food Network and Cooking Channel chefs didn’t cook but instead picked their favorite beach foods to be served up at the event and then mixed and mingled with hungry fans.

Scene at South Beach: Iron Chef Symon Scores Second Burger Bash Win

Iron Chef Michael Symon scored his second win in a row at SOBE's Burger Bash.

Last night Iron Chef Michael Symon reigned supreme at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival Burger Bash. The field was tight and the competition tough, but Symon scored the People’s Choice award with his Yo! Burger, a towering artform of provolone cheese, fried salami, onions and a hot Hungarian mustard sauce. Symon stood front and center at the B Spot table to greet fans as they stepped up to get their hands on the juiciest burger at the bash. One bite of the burger left them searching for napkins while simultaneously going in for bite number two.

Worst Cooks Finale: He Said, She Said

Chefs (and Boot Camp Sergeants) Anne Burrell and Robert Irvine let us in on their candid conversation about the two Worst Cooks finalists, Joshie and Georg.

Anne on Joshie: If you had asked me at the beginning if Joshie was going to win, I would have said no way. But at the same time, I had a little glimmer that this was going to be my Rachel Coleman [last season’s winner]. You know, I really did. I said it on the first day, Robert, when you put him on my team.

He got it together after a while of me being like “Dude, take this seriously.” He came in to do his flambé or something and he’s like “I’m not going to that…” and I’m like “You’re what?” And he’s like “I mean, I AM going to do that.” His girlfriend was like “Wow, how did you get him to do that?” I whipped him into shape. I put the fear of Chef Anne into him. He grew not to irritate me.

I wouldn’t say that Joshie and I are going out to drinks anytime soon, but at the beginning I thought I was going to kill him. He kind of grew on me like a wart. He was not the crowd favorite, the team favorite, or my favorite. That he could transform himself and buckle down and take it seriously, I have to applaud him for that. I think he really wanted it; his eyes were opened up to so many different things. On the first day, when he was making his mess of a dish and brought it up to us, he said “I feel bad because my station was so messy and someone had to come behind me and clean it up.” I thought, that right there is the door opening. That right there, that is my Rachel Coleman. I can probably do something with this kid if he can get out of his own way.
