Michael Symon knows a thing or two about Thanksgiving dinner. In fact, he’s already prepared two this year. The chef told Food and Wine Magazine that by the end of July the had prepared one traditional Midwestern meal with all the Thanksgiving trimmings in his Manhattan apartment and a second on the set of Iron Chef America’s Thanksgiving Battle. Many of Chef Symon’s dishes are Greek-inspired, adding flavorful twists to some of the old standards.
If you haven’t seen the usual mounds of pumpkins lined up in fields or canned pumpkin stocked to the ceiling at your local supermarket, it’s because there’s a pumpkin shortage in the Northeast. Due to heavy rains and the destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Irene, many farmers say they’ve lost thousands of pumpkins, some their entire crop.
“Wholesale prices have doubled in some places as farmers nurse their surviving pumpkin plants toward a late harvest. Some farmers are trying to buy pumpkins from other regions to cover orders,” said The Associated Press.

Guy Fieri will host Brew B’Que at the Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival in Santa Monica, Calif., October 13-16. Chefs from across the country will be serving their top home-style barbecue recipes alongside beers from all over the world. A portion of the proceeds will benefit St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. The four-day event will also feature Tyler Florence, Masaharu Morimoto, Duff Goldman, Scott Conant, Giada De Laurentiis and Michael Chiarello.
The 2011 New York Wine and Food Festival kicked off Thursday night with meatballs, lots of them. With what seems to be a festival tradition, Meatball Madness, hosted by Giada De Laurentiis, is a time when restaurants can display their version of a perfect meatball. Over 20 restaurants featured this popular comfort food to a sold-out crowd — they munched on meatballs containing everything from pork, to veal, to beef and even vegetarian options.
Joey Campanaro from The Little Owl won the judge’s choice award for his grandmother’s gravy meatball slider, while The Meatball Shop hit a soft spot with the crowd and was given the people’s choice award.
The second season of The Great Food Truck Race hit the road with eight new food trucks and a grand prize of $100,000. Every Sunday, we saw each truck pull out all the tricks to stay in the game. But, ultimately, one truck said goodbye each week. Sunday night, it was down to the final two: The Lime Truck and Hodge Podge. Both battled multiple Speed Bumps and a Truck Stop that changed the competition for good.
