McDonald's Asks: Do You Want Sriracha and Kale With That?

Sriracha and kale may not really seem like the sort of things you’d expect to find in between the halves of your McDonald’s bun, but now you can. The House That Ronald Built is adding both yummy hipster signifiers to its sandwiches.

McDonald’s is spicing up its Signature Craft Recipes sandwich menu with the nationwide rollout of its Signature Sriracha sauce, which officially launched July 31. Mickey D’s Sriracha Big Mac sauce will bring a “bold and spicy” flavor to a variety of sandwiches, including on a 1/4-pound burger paired with white cheddar cheese, a slice of tomato, “crispy onions,” and baby spinach and kale on an “artisanal roll.” It will also be available on chicken sandwiches (customers can choose between crispy or grilled) and, for a limited time, National Restaurant News reports, as a dipping sauce for Chicken McNuggets and fries.

McDonald’s tested the sauce in several West Coast locations last summer and has been gradually introducing it in other locales, adding it, alongside Pico Guacamole and Sweet BBQ Bacon, to its premium, customizable line of Signature Crafted Recipes. At the time of its initial limited introduction in 2016, the company acknowledged in a release that the addition of premium greens to sandwiches was “a different approach” — and no random gesture.

“Baby kale and baby spinach were chosen specifically to balance out the spicy sauce while serving as the perfect partner to accompany the other savory ingredients of white cheddar cheese, onions and tomato,” the company said of the sandwich.

First avocado (guacamole) and bacon and now kale and sriracha? Next thing you know, you’ll be washing it all down with a McMicrobrew or McKombucha.
