Prom season, like so many stages of young people’s lives, is a time to both embrace tradition and to challenge — and to learn from mistakes and use them to redefine what is possible.

That’s why you’ve just have to love this season’s latest craze: prom croissants.

Young men are presenting their dates with croissants to wear on their wrists in lieu of corsages. (I mean, at least there’s something to snack on in the limo.)

It all apparently started with a Texas teen named Sophie Martini, who, in April, tweeted a screenshot of a text exchange she had with her prom date:

“Do I have to buy a Croissant,” he wondered.

“You mean a corsage,” she clarified.

Sophie’s date may have simply been confused, but the world was clearly hungry for the idea he had stumbled into. Her original tweet has been retweeted nearly 13,000 times and liked by more than 45,000 people.

Not only that, people are actually wearing croissants on their wrists. (Apparently no one is too concerned about butter stains on their fancy dresses …) They’re decorating them with sparkly flower doodads and bows.

And it seems that Sophie’s date made good on his promise and presented her with a croissant on prom night, which looked lovely with her pink and white gown.
