The Avocado Bun Throws the Burger-Loving World Into an Uproar

Instagram alert: Social media’s current food-nerd obsession is the avocado bun. What’s that, you ask? Why, it’s precisely what it sounds like: an entire ripe-and-ready avocado, halved and used as a sesame-seed-topped burger bun, with a cheeseburger, onion, tomato, pickles, lettuce and a “secret sauce” tucked between its gorgeous (yet mushy) twin mounds of green.

The unorthodox bun was posted on Instagram by Amsterdam-based food stylist and photographer Colette Dike (@fooddeco), and has quickly racked up thousands of “likes.” Yet the concept hasn’t proven a hit with all commenters.

“This is the worst excuse for a burger in history,” huffed one indignant Instagrammer. “nothing has and likely will never come close to how offensive of an abomination of food this is.”

In another image, Food Deco used an avocado bun to contain a breakfast burger topped with whipped feta cheese, onion, tomato, bacon and a fried egg. And in a third, the novel bun flanks a chickpea burger with vegan mayo and roasted baby corn.

“But how do you eat it?” wondered tkornedo.

With a knife and a fork, Dike has wisely advised. She told Mashable that it’s best to regard the burger as a “stacked salad.”

Look out, avocado toast: The gauntlet has been thrown down.
