These Limited-Edition Fridges Are True Works of Art
A fridge is a fridge is a fridge — the trusty kitchen appliance that keeps your food and drink pleasantly cool and fresh. Maybe it also makes your ice or dispenses water. But even if you love your refrigerator, you probably don’t consider it a work of art. Smeg and Dolce & Gabbana’s Frigoriferi d’Arte is, though.
The Italy-based 1950s-style refrigerator manufacturer and the luxury Italian fashion brand have joined forces to create a limited-edition, numbered line of 100 colorful refrigerators, hand-painted with folksy scenes and themes evoking Sicilian horse-drawn carts, to be revealed this month at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2016.
“Each refrigerator features images by Sicilian artists: lemons, the trinacria symbol, cart wheels, medieval knights and battle scenes — all distinctive elements of the poetic marionette theater and the Sicilian Cart as well as important aspects of the aesthetic of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana,” the Dolce & Gabbana site notes. “The themes developed for each product are embellished with classic floral motifs.”
The brightly hued fridges represent the handiwork of artists including Salvatore Sapienza and the mother-daughter team Adriana Zambonelli and Tiziana Nicosia, who worked under the guidance of Dolce and Gabbana, according to the Smeg website.
The fancy fridges won’t come cheap. While official prices have not been disclosed (interested parties can contact dgsmeg@smeg.it), Vogue reports that the appliances will run you around $34,140. But Stefano Gabbana has promised that they are “really the perfect collector’s pieces.” No fancy-fridge collection would be complete without one.
