Caffeinated Peanut Butter Now Exists

The next time you need a caffeine fix, skip the percolator, auto-drip and cold brew — and instead reach for peanut butter.

The next time you need a caffeine fix, you can pass by the percolator, skip the auto-drip and give your cold brewer the cold shoulder — and instead reach for the peanut butter jar.

Turns out you can now get a caffeine jolt — along with protein and electrolytes — from your PB. A new caffeinated peanut butter called Steem promises to deliver a smoother, more sustained release of energy than your basic cup of joe, thanks to, its makers claim, the longer time it takes your body to digest peanut butter.

Each two-tablespoon serving of Steem packs the equivalent caffeine of about two cups of coffee, so you’ll want to spread it in moderation. Steem, which sells for $4.99 per 8-ounce jar, is made with natural peanut butter and doesn’t contain artificial sweeteners.

Its makers promise that you’ll get your buzz on “without the jittery feeling” you can get from other kinds of caffeine products, which makes Steem "perfect not only for athletes and active people, but also for normal life.” But they caution that is for human consumption only and should never be fed to animals.

“A lot of domestic animals, like dogs and cats and birds, cannot digest caffeine properly and it can lead to SERIOUS health issues,” the Steem website warns. “We know that your dog loves peanut butter and we know you think it'd be hilarious to get him all jacked up and crazy, BUT DON'T. SERIOUSLY. IT WOULD NOT BE HILARIOUS.”

Yeah, that part is a little scary. But there’s something seriously intriguing about the idea of enjoying your caffeine in spreadable form.
