For a long time, the serrated grapefruit spoon was the blocker between my love of grapefruit and the number of times I actually indulged in the citrus fruit. The grapefruit spoon always seemed inefficient and often incapable of getting all of the meat out; a knife was usually involved as a back up plan. So it was almost a miracle when I discovered that I needn’t use a grapefruit spoon to get my fix: Segmenting took half the time and resulted in almost the whole fruit on my plate.

Cut the top off of the grapefruit and peel or slice the rind off as you would an orange, then you’ll be able to cut along each segment and slip each wedge out of its skin.

What’s left are beautifully plump grapefruit segments with hardly any waste. They can be eaten solo or star in these delicious recipes that feature the great tangy and sweet fruit flavors.

After Giada De Laurentiis peels her grapefruit, instead of segmenting it, she slices it lengthwise so that each 1/2-inch slice looks like a little flower. Fan out each slice on a platter before sprinkling with thin slices of red onion, chopped olives and basil. A drizzle of balsamic vinegar and olive oil will complete this clean salad.

Really fresh citrus fruit doesn’t need much to be delicious. Segments of red grapefruits and navel oranges come together in this colorful dish that can be served as is or drizzled with Campari for an after-dinner treat.

Just half of a grapefruit gives you 75 percent of your daily nutritional value of vitamin C, meaning that this salmon dinner is a nutritional powerhouse. Grapefruit juice is squeezed into the shallot sauce, then meaty sections are also swirled in to the reduction.

This adults-only way to drink your grapefruit juice will have you thinking of the tropics. Combine grapefruit juice, passion fruit puree, dark rum, sugar and seltzer in a blender, then blend on high until smooth and slushy. Garnish with a wedge of fresh pink grapefruit.

Bobby Flay’s grapefruit dessert might be reason enough to keep your serrated grapefruit spoon handy. It’s the best way to eat these grapefruit halves that have been sprinkled with sugar, cinnamon and ginger, then broiled until lightly golden brown.
