Restaurant Revisited: No Day at the Beach at Portu-Greek Cafe

Restaurant: ImpossibleAfter running Portu-Greek Cafe in Hudson, Fla., for eight years, husband-and-wife owners Jordan and Anne Lindiakos were losing at least $4,000 every month, so they looked to Robert Irvine for help in a last-ditch effort to save their combination Portuguese and Greek eatery. While what Robert deemed the restaurant’s “very plain” decor and the largely microwaved menu were surely in need of an overhaul, the business’ management style was largely to blame for its failure. “We don’t make long-term decisions,” Jordan admitted, speaking of himself, his wife and his children, who work at Portu-Greek Cafe. It was up to Robert and his Restaurant: Impossible team to not only transform the cuisine and decor at the restaurant, but also to improve Jordan’s leadership ability and help the family work better together. “At this time, we have at least doubled sales,” Anne says, noting that Portu-Greek is “very busy.” Jordan admits, “The decor is beyond everyone’s wildest dreams, including ours.”

Chris and Tony, Anne and Jordan’s sons, “are doing a bang-up job,” says their dad, who adds, “Tony has really taken the initiative to continue the new menu and improve the same based on the feedback.”

In terms of the food, virtually all microwave use has stopped, and the kitchen continues to make Robert’s version of lemon-chicken soup, Jordan notes. He says that the menu at Portu-Greek is now a mix of the items Robert created plus “most of our seafood items,” but he adds that they’re “keeping it to a one-page menu.” The long wait times have been decreased to “approximately 15 minutes,” according to Jordan. He says, “We are and have been taking reservations since the show, and that lends itself to a better flow of staff and service.”

Speaking of Portu-Greek’s leadership, Jordan admits: “I would like to say the kids are [in charge]; however, truth be told, I am still in charge.” Anne says Jordan “is trying very hard to change.” And she adds, “Only now does he talk to me about what is bothering him.”

    yes please post the gyro recipe!! I think that the ground meat idea is great. I am use to the processed lamb of the streets of NYC and I like how Robert interpreted that:)

    This place is 5 mins from our home.. We went there to try the gyros . We ordered the classic. I normally dont order them because i dislike them. My husband wanted me to try them. We enjoyed the flaming cheese first- i really enjoyed it. When the gyro and chips came i was surprised how fresh the lettuce was and it looked photo-shoot perfect !!! I first noticed the dressing that was a top of it ; the best ever !!! I truly enjoyed my gyro !! I didnt have to ask for extra sauce at all.. the chips.. i loved loved them first time ever as well…… I broke my low carb diet tonight for a free night… my next free night, will be at this place !!!

    I would love the recipe for the avgolemono soup. I'm going to try to recreate it based on Robert's demonstration on the show, but I would really appreciate the actual recipe.

    My mom, her fiance, and I went to this restaurant after seeing the show. She ordered the moussaka, and said it tasted horrible, and very bland. She only ate a few bites. Her fiance ordered the gyro, and also said it was terrible, and that the gyro meat was the same they used before the show. I ordered a seafood plate, and everything tasted so fishy it was disgusting. I love seafood, but it was disgusting there. The only thing my mom and her fiance enjoyed was the flaming cheese, (which set off the smoke alarm every time someone ordered it… very annoying…).

    Went a couple of weeks ago and was not greatly impressed. we had the fried clams and have to say there was plenty but not up to the standards that I have been use to in New England. They were only just warm by the time they were put on our table and noticed with the amount of people waiting that the service was not great. Sorry to hear the restaurant is up for sale because there is only a couple of places in FL that serve fried clams and will miss my favorite dinner.

    Interesting to see the owner thanked Robert for the makeover by jacking the price on a property he was already trying to sell. And all he had to do was shed a few tears about "the family." Lame.
