What to Watch: Two Chefs Try to Beat Bobby Flay

by in Shows, August 23rd, 2013

Beat Bobby FlayFor years Bobby Flay traveled across the country battling professional chefs and home cook enthusiasts alike in throwdowns, but in his all-new special, Beat Bobby Flay, he’s upping the ante and challenging culinary powerhouses to face off against him on his own turf, right in New York City. The concept is simple: One chef will have the opportunity to go head-to-head with the famed Iron Chef, but only after he or she bests a competitor. Two of Bobby’s peers — Jeff Mauro and Alex Guarnaschelli — will be on hand to determine which hopeful proves himself or herself worthy of a contest with Bobby by successfully outcooking the opponent using a secret ingredient. The winner will have ultimately earned the right to meet Bobby in battle — and will surprise him with the signature dish they both must cook.

In this 30-minute episode airing tomorrow, Saturday, August 24 at 9pm/8c, a Los Angeles- and a Chicago-based chef will travel to the Big Apple for their chance to beat Bobby Flay. They’ll throw down in an audience-packed arena, but just one will have the culinary chops needed to stand up against a Kitchen Stadium great. Be sure to tune in to find out who makes it to the final round of competition and see whether Bobby Flay ends up being beaten at his own game.

I anxiously anticipated Episode 1 of Beat Bobby Flay. I realized the chef who won the episode is the same Sarah who appeared on Bravo TV's Top Chef, Texas. Sarah is a bully. I don't doubt she can cook, but someone who did as much bullying on the Top Chef series and at the end when she lost told Emeril Lagasse to "f… off!" should not be given the opportunity to appear on national tv. Food Network eliminated Paula Dean for her public image problems and I hope they don't give this girl any more camera time.

She seems to have been working on a personality makeover. She's lost a lot of weight, so maybe she's developed a new, more comfortable level of self-esteem that's taken the place of her former bully behavior. It's reminiscent to me of Tiffani Faison, who had an Aha! Moment after seeing herself on Top Chef and came to Top Chef All Stars a very different person.

I would love Sarah's recipe!! Do the contestants share their recipe's?

I also will not watch if the sandwich clown is part of it. He has less culinary knowledge than the average 5 year old.

Bobby, that t-shirt really was not flattering, in fact everyone on the show was dressed as if they were ready to go dumpster diving. It's national tv, can people at least look like they didn't just fall out of bed? What you wear at home is none of my business, but on tv, slovenly is not not what I'd expect.

Jeff Mauro has a fully rounded classical culinary education. Food Network pushed him into the one-dimensional Sandwich King corner, but he's capable of much more, and I wouldn't be surprised if his position on Beat Bobby Flay is an attempt to allow him to expand the public's perception of him as a chef and food expert.

I always like your posts MoHub, and if you like him, that's fine, but he really doesn't seem to know much. He competed in Chopped and didn't even know to remove the bones from a raw sardine, he just threw the whole thing between 2 slices of bread, and got chopped for it. On the Bobby Flay show, he didn't know something about the food he should have and had to be told. I don't see any culinary expertise, I don't even see normal culinary knowledge. Getting a cooking certificate doesn't mean anything, lots of people pass such vocational certificate courses without ever learning anything. I have to go by what he does on air, he obviously lacks knowledge and experience

Anyone know what the black watch Bobby wears in the tv ad?
