Host-Turned-Competitor Ted Allen Joins the Battle — Chopped After Hours

by in Shows, July 30th, 2013

Although he’s overseen hundreds of rounds of Chopped, Ted had never before cooked in the kitchen, and he didn’t know the experiences of manipulating mystery ingredients, running through the pantry or competing against the clock firsthand. Until tonight, that is. In his first foray into battle against the Chopping Block, Ted went head-to-head-to-head with Marc and Maneet in an After Hours competition, while Chris filled his hosting shoes for the day. Ted and the judges watched three chef-competitors attempt a basket of crab legs, sweet vermouth, green asparagus and Mexican wedding cookies, before they, too, tried their hands at those ingredients with only 30 minutes on the clock.

Ted may have been the rookie contestant in the kitchen, but that didn’t stop him from tackling an ambitious dish of crab cakes, especially since the crab was frozen at the start of the battle. He quickly boiled it, making the meat easier to work with, before getting started on a vermouth vinaigrette. As is often the case among the chefs, he faced a potentially damning problem with just minutes left to cook, when his vinaigrette broke in the blender. Per the advice of peer and guest host Chris, however, Ted remade the mixture, and in the end, “it totally made the dish,” according to Chris.

What did you think of Ted’s first-ever attempt at cooking in the Chopped kitchen? How did his efforts compare to his peers’, and which of the competitors do you think made the most ambitious dish? Click the play button on the video above to watch the entire After Hours battle, then browse these behind-the-scenes photos to see Ted, Marc, Maneet and Chris in action.

watching a rerun from 2009 How could you reward a stealing, double-dipping arrogant cook, Chris. He should have been disqualified INSTANTLY. Obviously you reward that kind or character action. You are no longer considered top quality judges.!!!!!!!!!!

I have MAJOR issues having any woman or man cooking with their hair hanging in their face!!
Even in school hats were to be worn so why doesn't a competition of this stature have the same standards of cooking?

I would like to see a cooking celebrity show with Ina, Giada, Martha and Sandra Lee being the contestants. That would be fun to watch!

I liked the idea of having the judges try their hand at the baskets that seem to be difficult for some contestants. It was also fun to see the judges including Ted have a round at it and also have some fun. Chopped is one of the most interesting shows on the food network these days. I never tire from watching it, plus it gives us good ideas for cooking with new and interesting ingredients!

what ever happened to the winner who gave all or part of his winnings to the runner up so she could go visit her Grandmother before she died? And how did her trip go?

I very much agree with the previous posts regarding having hair hanging in their faces. I an also put off a bit with the contestants profusly sweating and having the sweaat drop into the food when they are plating

I would like to see an behind the scene episode on how the judges on the show Chopped come to their decision. Me and my cousin was watching the show and we differ on who won the show, I won by the way, but we both wondered how the judges came to their decision, especially on a close contest.

What a joke this show is…exploiting poor ass chefs, trying to make a living. Food Network makes tons of money on the expense of these chefs. Shame on Food Network!!

    • Kristina says:

Get over it Cynthia… if you won, why do you care??? You are lying. You did not win shit. Why you even bother posting anything if you won?? You are shady at best….

    • Kristina` says:
