You’ve seen them judge the competition, battle for the title of All-Stars champion and compete in a friendly game with colleagues on After Hours, but there’s a lot you don’t know about the judges of Chopped. Here’s your chance to get to know the nine people behind the Chopping Block.
Marc Murphy is a regular judge on Chopped and has also appeared on Iron Chef America. Marc has logged more than 20 years in the restaurant business, and he is currently executive chef and owner of Benchmarc Restaurants (Landmarc and Ditch Plains in New York) and Benchmarc Events. But there a few things you might not know about Marc — for example, if he hadn’t gone into the culinary field, he might have become an architect. Find out more about Marc in his Q&A below.
What’s your Achilles’ heel ingredient, one that you hate to work with or encounter in someone else’s dish?
Marc Murphy: The durian fruit! It’s just a very strange ingredient to work with.
What dish or ingredient will we never catch you eating?
MM: Overcooked liver.
What was your most memorable meal? What, where, who? Details, please.
MM: Most recently I went to New Orleans and ate at the famous Commander’s Palace. It was such a memorable lunch with my family that lasted for hours. I especially loved the Snapping Turtle Soup!
What’s your guilty pleasure food?
MM: I don’t think any food is guilty, I love eating everything!
Is there one dish that you always order out and never make at home?
What kitchen tool can’t you live without?
MM: Japanese mandoline — it turns everything into dust!
If you weren’t in food, what career would you like to have tried?
What’s your favorite “food city” to visit?
MM: New Orleans
What’s your favorite late-night snack?
MM: Usually depends how much I’ve had to drink but I really love spaghetti carbonara at any time of the day!
What’s one must-have at your last supper?
MM: A great Camembert cheese!
Who’s your favorite person to cook with?
MM: My wife and kids!
