What’s Your Dream Dinner Party?

Dean and CarnieThis past Sunday on the finale of Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off, the two finalists, Dean and Carnie, cooked a dinner for some Hollywood VIPs including famous chefs Nancy Silverton and Suzanne Goin and comedian Kathy Griffin. Going into the challenge, the celebrity contestants didn’t know what food would be available, but they still managed to create dishes that epitomized their cooking philosophies and ultimately impressed the guests. It was a great opportunity for both Dean and Carnie to be cooking for such an elite group, an opportunity they might never get again.

It’s not every day that a dream dinner party takes place. It’s a rare event when you can even get your entire family together to share in a special dinner. Now imagine a dinner party where you got to serve anything and everything you desired and where you’d be joined by the people you most admire.     My dream dinner party would be in Massachusetts, where I want to retire in, and as a celebration of the food and food places I have been to out there and LOVE A LOT! The party would consist of the following:

    New England Clam Chowdah – by the kettleful from, say, Captain Parker's Pub in W Yarmouth
    Lobstah Sam Adams Ale Macaroni & Cheese
    Veggie Risotto Cakes – from the Hearth & Kettle restaurant chain – they're famous for this appetizer
    Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice and Sam Adams Boston Ale for thirst-quenching
    Apple Walnut Maple Pie
    Friendly's Forbidden Chocolate Ice Cream – in sundaes and milkshakes
    and last,but not least my one and only recipe that got me lots of rave reviews locally as well as on a 2009 NFNS blog – "Chocolate Raisin Pudding Delight" – I'll submit my recipe later

    Here's my recipe for "Chocolate Raisin Pudding Delight":

    CHOCOLATE PUDDING MIXTURE
    2 boxes Jell-O chocolate pudding & pie filling with 4 cups whole milk
    1 each – 8 oz. Hershey's Symphony and Hershey's Reserve Special Dark chocolate bars
    4 T gourmet chocolate sauce – available from Fran's Chocolates of Seattle,WA
    1 T Hershey's Bar in a Jar hot fudge topping
    1 C flour or cornstarch to thicken

    Cook the pudding according to package directions on LOW-MEDIUM LOW heat, then add all remaining ingredients and stir well.. Once done, turn stove off & transfer to a COLD burner & let it sit for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in a mixing bowl, stir 1 1/4 C equal parts Sun-Maid dark and golden raisins, 1/3 C pure maple syrup,1/3 C Welch's 100% Concord Grape Juice & 2/3 C brown sugar for 5 minutes. After 30-minute cooldown, fold the raisin mixture into the pudding mixture, stir well, and transfer to an airtight storage container. Cover it with plastic wrap and aluminum foil, then refrigerate overnight.

    My dream dinner party is an over the top "old world" skiers fantasy! All guests have to ski to the location: Cloud Nine Restaurant on the top of Highlands Mountain in Colorado– outside, on a sun filled day with checkered tablecloths on the picnic benches. A meal inspired by European skiing– something out of Bon Appetit magazines recent article, "Lunch at 8500ft."–

    Catered by the Alsatian restaurant L'Auberge Chez Francois, in Great Falls Virginia, http://www.laubergechezfrancois.com

    We would start with Fondue or Rachelette that Cloud Nine is famous for– then items from L'Auberge such as:

    La salade composée au Roquefort
    Roquefort cheese salad

    La matelote de poissons et crustaçés comme en Alsace, sauce homardine
    lobster, shrimp, scallops, crabmeat, rockfish champagne lobster sauce

    La choucroute royale garnie à L’Alsacienne, cuite au crémant d’Alsace
    Alsatian feast – sauerkraut, sausages, pork sausage, duck confit and foie gras

    Chocolate Souffle`

    Paired Champagne ,Wine and Limoncello are a must

    Guests would include: Food Network Chefs Giada and Ina Garten; Anthony Bourdain, Lidia Bastianich, Juila Child as she could tell us about this style of food, and she could perhaps argue with Jose Andres and his gastronomic science de cuisine– Film maker Baz Lhurmann and his wife who he collaborates with– I have always wanted to meet them– various food bloggers– all Aspen ski patrol as they are passionate about the mountain, and will help me ski down after such a decadent meal!

    Your idea sounds good, but I would start with a dry red wine and end with a blueberry or black raspberry cheesecake.
