Chef Wanted: Sea Dog Steak & Ale Update by in Shows, February 14th, 2013

Chef WantedSea Dog Steak & Ale in Northborough, Mass., is a brewpub known for its signature beers. The owners called in Anne Burrell and the Chef Wanted team to help them find a new executive chef who would take on the task of reinventing the restaurant as a gastropub. After two grueling tests and two hectic dinner services, an offer was extended to Chef Amie Hurd.

Through the tests and dinner services, Chef Hurd showed she understood beer by incorporating it into many of her dishes. Unfortunately, her lack of experience working with a large crew showed during dinner service — she wouldn’t give up control of her dishes to her team by delegating tasks. But by the end she realized she couldn’t keep up without putting trust in her team. The owners felt she was the best person for the job and that with time she’d gain the experience required to run the restaurant, so they offered her the position.

FN Dish caught up with Chef Hurd after her win. Watch the video above to find out what it was like competing, what she learned from Anne Burrell and about the turn of events that took place since the show taped.

Really, no mention of the fact that this restaurant closed in December?

    • Stella says:

My apologies, it was buried in the video. But again, that's a big development that should have been mentioned at the end of the episode. How many people will watch the show and never watch this video?

Maybe it is time for some transparency in how Food Network vets establishments for its shows like this and "Restaurant Impossible."

I can't believe they would even put this on the air since they're already closed. I thought I had learned my lesson from the disappointing Celebrity Challenge cookoff. Fool me once, shame on you Food Network. Fool me twice, shame on me.

This is right up there with Gilbert Godfrey!!!

  5. Elderleigh says:

I usually don't have a problem with Chef Anne…at least as much of a problem as many other viewers indicate…BUT this season she seems to be yelling for the sake of yelling like a harried fish wife. Come on An e… ut the over zealous yelling and become a helpful mentor… not a vocal annoyance.

  6. Whitebread says:

This chef was brilliant, I am glad she is here in Portsmouth. Just watching her talent, I can just imagine what she can do with food without ppl yelling at her, with a staff that is "her" staff. As far as any reality show, listen they do what they do for ratings, they invest their monies and want to be successful in this tough business. I still enjoy seeing ppl get an opportunity that they may have never had regardless. Its about the Chefs, who might even get other offers after the show.

  7. Patty Annelli says:

I understand that restaurant has since closed down, due to nasty roach problem.
