Fun With Fondue

Who says you can’t play with your food? Fondue is a warm bath of melted cheese, chocolate or blended fruit puree just waiting for you to dunk something into it. Best served with cubes of bread or freshly chopped fruits or vegetables, fondue can be made in a classic fondue warming pot or on the stove and later plated. Our savory and sweet fondue recipes below are quick-to-prepare snacks or light meals, so grab a fondue fork and start dipping.

Food Network Magazine’s traditional Fondue (pictured above) is made with gooey-good Gruyere cheese, crisp white wine and a healthy splash of cognac. Serve along with slices of tart green apples to balance the richly flavored cheese.

For an easy game-day appetizer, try Food.com’s 20-minute Blue Cheese Fondue. The combination of creamy blue cheese, tangy Dijon mustard and a sprinkling of fresh thyme leaves creates a decadent dish. Offer Food.com’s Homemade Barbecue Potato Chips or celery stalks as dipping companions to this fan-favorite fondue.

Michael Chiarello’s easy Mango Fruit Fondue from Cooking Channel is a go-to brunch pick that the whole family will enjoy. Featuring fresh mangoes, coconut cream and refreshing lime juice, this kid-approved dip is ideally served with Italian biscotti or ladyfinger cookies.

For an indulgent dessert, Food 2’s Cabernet Chocolate Sauce is a must-try. Semisweet chocolate is melted with sugar, cream and butter and combined with Cabernet wine to make a heavenly sweet sauce. Strawberries, raspberries and bananas are classic fruit pairings.

    I remember back in the 70's when fondue was THE thing to do but I always had a soft spot of that form of communal ratting. Sure it's messy, but that's half of the fun and the sauces and items dunked can be as varied as your imagination.

    Get past the standard cheese dips with crusty bread and try bubbling hot broths to cook thin slices of meat & vegetables (you can drink the broth afterwards too), or try melting down some of your extra Halloween candy and dip in carrot sticks or fruit. The best part of fondue is that there really aren't any rules…so play to your hearts content, just make sure you have a napkin handy!
