Fun Facts About Guacamole

by in View All Posts, January 14th, 2009

As I walked in this morning, I noticed a sign on the mailroom door announcing the All-Staff Guacamole Cook Off this Friday!  I decided to postpone a few other blog ideas to next week and share some fun facts about the delicious green dip.

Did you know that guacamole dates back to the Aztecs?  The Aztecs were particularly fond of ahuaca-mulli, or avocado-sauce, because of the high fat content of the fruit (apparently, an avocado is a fruit!).  But don’t be alarmed! This is the good fat that you want incorporated into your diet.  Later, the Spanish brought the wonderful concoction to the New World where it grew and flourished in popularity, becoming a staple in Central and South American cuisine.

The basic ingredients for guacamole are avocado, serrano chile, onion, tomato, and cilantro (a member of the carrot family). These are measured out and ground together in a molcajete, the traditional Mexican mortar and pestle, served and enjoyed!

So what are you waiting for?!  Share with us your favorite guacamole recipes!

Happy Dipping!

Once again I’m jealous of the entire FN staff! Seriously, where else can the staff compete in an All-Staff Guacamole Cook Off! Guacamole is my favorite chip accompaniment and one of my game day snack staples. Its simple – creamy and delicious. I combine avocado, tomato, sour cream, salt, pepper, cilantro and fresh lime juice in mine.

Kendra, we are expecting you to pull out a big “W” in this contest as our FN Dish resident foodie (no pressure LOL)! Please let us know how the competition turns out and do “dish” on the top recipes!!

Ok, how come no one invited me to this cook-off? I love you guys at Food Network, and I think something like this would be totally fun. Anyways, no one would like my Guacamole unless you like lots of garlic. I use avocado, hot sauce (as hot as you like it), lots of garlic minced (about 2 to 3 gloves to one avocado), lime juice (just enough to keep the avocado from browning), salt and pepper(for me, lots of pepper) to taste, and sometimes tomato minced. Very simple, but it's got a kick. Watch the hot sauce and the pepper if you don't like spice, though. With it, this stuff will spin your ears. So, be careful.
