Parting Glances

So, there you have it, Melissa is our new Food Network star.

So, why Melissa and not Jeffrey?

In many respects, they’re flip sides of the same coin. Two warm, likeable, smart experts. Both parents; similar ages. Both great communicators, full of info, who became remarkably comfortable on camera. Either could have had a hit show.

I struggled with the decision.

Overall, Jeffrey’s food fascinated and delighted me. Except for a few notable flubs, most of his food had a spicy elegance to it. The ingredients that attracted him – and would have been the heart of his “Ingredient Smuggler” show – and the sophistication of his recipes wouldn’t have appealed to everyone. That’s OK; we do a range of shows.

Melissa’s bottomless trove of tips and tricks kept teaching me things, and I thought viewers would appreciate them too. But mostly, her food kept winning me over. It is exactly the kind of smart, sophisticated but accessible home cooking that viewers constantly tell me they want to learn from us. And her deep knowledge of budget and time-conscious recipes seemed perfect for these times.

In the end, Melissa’s personality “popped” more for me than Jeffrey’s did. When I referred to him as the “zen meister”, I worried that at times his “steady as she goes” demeanor could feel slightly flat and predictable in comparison to Melissa.

I can’t state this any more strongly: I’m a huge fan of Jeffrey’s. He’s a class act and has a huge fan base. He just got aced out ever so slightly on this final challenge.

Melissa never stopped surprising me. It’s the edges, quirks and unpredictability that make a star. And her bright energy, endless high spirits and determination definitely excited me. As Ina said, “She glows in the dark.”

So – by a point or two – the decision went to Melissa.

Oh, and for those who asked, Big Daddy’s House, the show of last year’s winner, Aaron McCargo, Jr., continues to be one of the top rated shows in our weekend cooking block.

Tune in next Sunday at 12:30pm/11:30c for Melissa’s show, Ten Dollar Dinners with Melissa d’Arabian. Yes, Dinner for 4 for $10. What’s not to love?

Yes, Jeffrey should have won! He is trying to introduce international flavor to our foods which I think is refreshing and innovative. Jeffrey is not fake or pretentious and not boring. He seems very approachable, humble and not annoying.

Melissa is annoying, loud and seem quite obnoxious. I will not watch her show! Not at all!

  2. Msmith says:

    Melissa Won :(

I'm a working mom and she doesn't speak for me. Every time I hear and see her I think "Gerbil on speed". I cannot watch her or listen to her. It was hard enough to watch her week after week. Sometimes Zen isn't so bad. I'm a dedicated Food Network fan and I love Guy Fieri but I definitely won't be tuning in when Melissa's on. I wish her luck.

    • Gale says:

I absolutely agree. I enjoyed Jeffrey's calmer ways. That he didn't tell us everything about himself is fine with me. Wow, watch all the chefs on PBS, many of them just teach cooking skills and techniques. They don't need to babble on about how their mother died or that they have four screaming brats at home.

      • Mel says:

How do you know that they are screamaing brats??
couldn't they be well manered young ladies??

  3. Febe says:

You guys have no idea what you just did, but is your channel, i will miss Bobby, Rachael, Alton, Emeril and many more but not more of this for me. She is so boring, and please ask her to stop talking about her family, i guess she has nothing else to talk about, bye bye, chao, adios !!!!

  4. Peg Fragale says:

I am extremely disappointed that Melissa won. She was just good on the last two shows! Jeffrey was consistently great on each and every show. You are very wrong in letting Jeffrey go. What a big mistake you made! I was really surprised at your choice after all of you stated how much you thought Jeffrey was so great!

  5. Paula R. says:

You all got it wrong this time. Melissa drove me crazy and should have been sent packing in the first couple of weeks. I will never watch her show. Hopefully Jeffrey will get a show anyway. I would love to watch him every week. I watch Food Network to learn about new foods, not a new way to prepare the same old food!!!!

  6. Janie says:

For those that don't want to watch, don't watch, but we all know you will be too curious not too. Regardless, plenty of us will be watching and you know good and well the execs at Food Network had feedback and a sayso in this decision and I would bet all indications were that more people could relate to Melissa more and wanted to see her or they would not have picked her.

  7. lisa says:

The 10 dollars dinner is probably chicken again.

  8. Alisa says:

Thank you for choosing Melissa. As a working mom of three, I will definitely be putting her tips to good use. I too preferred the Survival Guide format because, for one thing, there are 5 in our family. I will be watching for the tips, not to try and get it all in $10. That won't hurt, but I'll be watching for the tips and tricks. Jeffrey had a very pilot but as mentioned above – the ingredient he chose – harissa – was something I was trying to find a couple of weeks ago for a Bobby Flay recipe and yep – it's not generally available at your local market. Have to order it so his recipes may not be as practical & viewer friendly. Good but not as easy to execute. I'd definitely watch a show like that though to get introduced to new ingredients in a fun way. Thanks Food Network – we'll be back for next season – and for Melissa's show!

  9. Summer says:

C'mon. Enough of the sour grapes. Really.

To the poster who wondered who is so tight they need to feed a family of 4 on 10 bucks a meal, I'm raising my hand.

I'm not arrogant enough to claim that I wouldn't like to learn to shave a few bucks here and there off our grocery bill. It adds up. Who wouldn't want to eat well and still be able to serve delicious food that small children will eat?

    That said….

You go, Melissa!! Can't wait to see the show :D

(We will miss Jeffrey though, couldn't you pretty please find place for him too?)

Thank you, Bob, Bobby, and Susie!

    • cadge says:

EI'm glad so many are scrimping on their kids' nourishment to pay for cable tv. Great priorities!

      • luvcookin says:

Real nice for you to judge people without actually knowing them. In my case, I am recently divorced. Ex makes over $100,000.00 a year. I make closer to 25K. Television is my only entertainment. I don't go to movies or eat out at restaurants. I don't get my nails done and I cut my own hair. And you know what? Every mother I know would go hungry herself before she let her kid go hungry. Melissa's show is going to show people how to put healthy meals on the table at a great price. So get off your high horse and quit judging. What goes around comes around.

  10. Cindy Shingler says:

As far as I'm concerned, tonight's conclusion was a huge disappointment. I'm sure Melissa is a fine person, but her demeanor could not be more contrived. Jeffrey has a smooth sophistication that just brings the viewer right into the set, wanting to take a bite. Melissa is just a repeat of Rachel Ray . . . we just don't need two of the same! 30 Minute Meals . . . $10 Meals . . . hmmm . . . not too creative! Food Network, you can do better than that!

  11. Sandy Green says:

I, like many of these other posts will not be watching Melissa. I watch the food network to learn something new and exciting. I was excited about the idea of learning about new ingredients. Good Lord, so Melissa has four kids and can cook, so can a zillion other people. Think you guys really goofed.

  12. Sybil Turner says:

I REALLY wanted Jeffrey to win. We already have plenty of people to give ideas for downhome cooking. We wanted someone that would introduce use to the world of ingredients and tell us how and when to use them. Frankly, I loved his "zin" personality.

  13. LisaR. says:

I feel happy for Melissa but was hoping to see Jeffrey be The Next Food Network Star – his pilot was a bit more interesting to me. I really had no clue who would win – their pilots were both fantastic! I am confident I will see Jeffrey at some point in time with his own show. Jeffrey is a star in my book. Thanks for a great season!

  14. Mary says:

I won't be expending the energy (or electricity) to watch Melissa. This was supposed to be the next Food Network Star, not the next person who can cook chicken 147 ways (while complaining how busy her life is).

  15. Shari says:

While I am sure that Melissa's show will do well, I personally was cheering for Jeffrey a smidge more than I was cheering for Melissa.

Melissa makes the same types of food that I've already learned about from FN. Jeffrey continually brought ingredients that I was unfamiliar with (and yes, I WILL be buying harissa this week!!!) and want to learn more about.

FN, be wise and give Jeffrey his show, too, before another station snatches him up!! I'll definitely go with him to whatever other network he goes to!

    His,

    Shari

  16. barefoot patook says:

I am in the midst of watching the Next FoodNetwork Star and must say I am in love with Jeffrey. I live on the west coast and when I logged on to view Jeffrey & Melissa's profile ( I am very inspired by their age) I found that Melissa won. I like both concepts that Jeffrey and Melissa have for a show especially Melissa's take home tidbits…..BUT what I would love to see is Jeffrey teaching me how to cook culinary delights from around the world. I am 31. ( not yet a mother ) and hope to keep advancing my cooking skills. Persian food is a favorite cuisine as is french ( I love you Ina!! ). Learning that Jeffrey's wife was Iranian excited me more than you know. Again, please, make this man a star, HE IS. ( I love his laid back sophisticated manner)

  17. Mic5 says:

I liked both Jeffrey and Melissa, so I'm happy with the outcome.

I hope her "$10 dinners" show doesn't include ingredients made in $300 food processors, or seasoned with expensive herbs and spices. I hate shows that claim "you can make this on a budget with what you have around the house!", and then they proceed to chop veggies with $100 dollar chef knives, and throw meat on $1000 grills.

  18. Scott P says:

Please Bob and the rest of the Food Network execs,

How lucky you are with the decision you had to make tonight. You couldn't go wrong with either Melissa of Jeffery. My wife an I sat there the whole episode commenting on how we love them both and how we didn't want either of them to lose. We knew that whoever won, we'd watch their show.

In the end we wondered why you couldn't keep both of them. We only know TV as viewers, but it sure seemed like Jeffrey was a "meal ready to serve," so to speak. In other words, he could star on a show tomorrow, and if we didn't know any better, we'd think he'd have been doing TV for years.

So please allow us to first tell you how envious we are of your job (it's got to be one of the coolest jobs in the world) and second ask you to find a way to keep Jeffrey on Food Network. Please don't let his talent go unused (and deny us the pleasure of watching both him and Melissa).

    Thank you.

  19. Erica says:

I don't recall ever having been this thrilled and sad at the same time over a TV show. I'm so happy for Melissa, and I will definitely be watching her show. I've already picked up a lot of tips from her.

Yet I wish that Jeffrey could have won as well. I love the idea of taking an unusual ingredient and turning it into something that is feasible to make.

NFNS is designed for only one winner, but I think we will all be winners if Jeffrey is also given a show, and soon!!

  20. Matthew says:

WOW can u believe another stupid move by FN they can never think out of the box. It is as if they can only focus on the predictable none inventive candidate that cannot achieve the large task of bringing Food Network back to life. I was very excited to even think that Jeffrey would win and bring something fresh to the Network, but no. The judges have decided AGAIN to Pick the likely and much seen home cook from Texas. COME ON we NEED better then her.

  21. Haley says:

Congrats, Melissa the win was well deserved! I look forward to your show but wonder why they changed the angle, survival idea was catchy and clever. But whatever angle, I can't wait to use your tips and tricks in my kitchen!

  22. Alison says:

I knew that Melissa would win for her appeal to the everyday Mom/Cook. She has a great personality and think she will have a good tip here & there. But I would love to see Jeffrey on his own show. Although I may not make everything he does, I would love to learn about ingredients that I am not familiar with & would not ordinarily try. It was a truly hard choice between the both of them becasue they BOTH need to have their own shows. Give us (the viewers) a chance to have the best of both of them!

  23. Andrew Behrens says:

First off, having read Bob's blog, I can see where he is coming from. Making a decision like this is tremendous and people don't always take everything into account, myself included. I do agree with a lot of people that Jeffrey was fantastic and does also deserve a show but I do see that Melissa does have a treasure trove of ideas and is going to attract an audience on the mere fact of "how do you feed a family of 4 for only $10?". I know in these times many, many people (me included) are definetly looking for a way to make a meal delicious and not too expensive. On the flip side, I do hope Jeffrey's show idea doesn't end with the pilot. It, like Sue said, inspired me to try Harissa. Congrats to all the finalists for making it as far as they did and a special congrats to Melissa.

  24. luvcookin says:

Congratulations Melissa you are an inspiration. Bob and Co. chop “Chopped” and give Jeffrey the spot.

chris on August 2, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Sometimes I enjoy "Chopped". I would rather them get rid of "The Secret Life Of…." and "Unwrapped". So boring! And I really do not care for Marc Summers!

  25. Jen says:

I am so excited for Melissa to win and can't wait till next week to watch her show and record it whenever she's on! BUT I will have to say I'm sad (as is my daughter) for Jeffrey…his pilot was great! I was so hoping that there would be a "never before" double win!

  26. JR says:

Congrats Melissa and FN! You just made this viewer very happy. Can't wait to see the new show.

  27. Roberta Sanchez says:

I think you picked a winner, Bob. I am concerned though that the $10 dinner concept, while a good one, will not be enough for Melissa's fan base. I want to learn how to cook that ratatouille and that damn pastry dessert of hers, in addition to her budget-conscious meals. How about after she kicks this one off, you give her another one called, "Home Sophisticate" so we can learn the good stuff, too?

  28. Alex says:

Congratulations to Melissa, she has been a pleasure to watch throughout the season and I'm sure her show will do very well. I just wish they could have had them both win- after all, they were friends on the show and I'd be surprised if Jeffrey didn't end up with a show in the long run. He is a fantastic chef, has a great personality, and his exotic mouth-watering recipes are something I'd like to see every week just as I want to see Melissa's wonderful cooking tips. Even if I personally can't always cook his food, I'd still tune in just because he is so fun to watch.

I can't say I disagree with the choice of a winner: after all, Melissa was far more gracious through the finale and Jeffrey's head was getting a little too big for comfort. However, I think they should both end up being winners, and I hope both will soon be on my television again very soon.

(Also, thank you for hiring Adam after all. He was always my favorite last season and I love watching him whenever I get the chance. He's fantastic!)

  29. Carole says:

May I just say – I'll not watch another 'Sandra Lee' personality, just as I refuse to watch 'the Neelies (sp). You all need to welcome something different than what you already have; and I believe Jeffrey brings that. PLEASE find something different – if only for a change.

  30. Marcia says:

It will take talent and creativity to create appealing $10 dinners. Melissa is up to the task.

  31. Frances says:

Even though I enjoyed watching Melissa, I felt Jeffrey's food would attract more viewers since it is unusual and different.

  32. Jeanette says:

I can't believe you revealed the winner before the end of the show in all time zones. (I'm in Mountain Standard Time) … humm, unless my cable provider is delaying the show.

I'm so unhappy Melissa won, she's annoyingly too sweet!! I can't imagine anyone will still be watching her after a few months. Jeffery really has staying power, much more interesting!

  33. al says:

My family and I have been watching the show from day 1. All of us are big Jeffrey fans and hugely dissapointed. Lets get the facts straight.

    - How many individul episodes each Jeffrey and

    Melissa won? Not even close.

    - Who gets nervous and who is cool while

    cooking? Not even close.

    - Who had meltdowns and ended up crying at

    multiple episodes. Not even close.

    - Why would you talk about your mother killing

herself in the final stages of the cooking

    show?

To Melissa's credit, she knows how to use peoples emotions to her advantage and she was able to sell Bob and Bobby about being a home cook as a Mother and the potential audiance for this market would follow her. Not us.

We're hoping Jeffrey gets his own show that he deserves from another network. Last time I felt this way was when Chris Daughtry got eliminated from American Idol.

  34. SJP says:

I am really diappointed in your decision topick Melissa. I am sorry but there are plently of practical shows on FN, I really think that Jeffrey would have added a show to the FN that would bring in a lot of viewers. Using the smuggling idea was genius bc you could have worked a show off of his experience and taken us on a cultural journey every week.

  35. ms says:

I thought I would be happy for either finalist. However, I agree with other bloggers that Jeffrey's idea for a show had more potential. His kind, gentle manner and his knowledge of cooking will really be missed. I also thought his idea of using one featured ingredient each show was a wonderful one. We are more connected than every with other countries and cultures through technology. Our country is made of people from so many different places. What a great way to honor these people and cultures than through one special ingredient. I think Jeffrey's ideas would have more lasting power and a long future with the network. What a loss!!

  36. Gloria says:

$10 Dinners is a retarded idea… an insult to your audience. The Kitchen Survival Guide would have been a much better idea.

    I won't be tuning in.

  37. Min says:

Congrats Melissa. Your pilot was great. FN – terrific choice! So many women can relate to her. 20 minutes after the finale, I couldn't even remember the name of the ingredient that Jeffery featured. He is a great talent though – please find a spot for him.

  38. Dennis says:

The Food Network is foolish for choosing between the two. Frankly, both of these people bring more to the table than several of your existing "stars", and in two completely different ways. Congratulations Melissa!!!

  39. Danielle says:

This will not be one of the shows that I will watch. You already have Rachel Ray with meals and great advice that can be made by the harried homemaker Mom at a reasonable price. Jeffery would of brought a show that was fun, informative and a bit of a challenge to those of us who like to cook. Please think about giving this wonderful gentleman and superb chef his own show.

  40. jeannine says:

I wish Melissa well… having said that, I think FN made a huge mistake. Jeffrey has talent, charisma, and a gentleness about him. Also, his idea for incorporating international ingredients has staying power and a future!! It is a shame to lose him!!

  41. Tiff says:

I liked them both. I figured Melissa was going to win from week3.

As mother, I agree Melissa appeals to me. And I am sure not being a cook I will learn great things from her show. I liked the Idea on survival However $10 will be great as well.

However That being said I think you are fooling yourself if you think there is not as much as an audience for Jeffery. Jeffery would encourage me to go that extra step to Spice (Pun intended.) up my dinners. The next time you have an open slot in the net work I think you know who to fill it with!

  42. Barb says:

I feel the wrong person won the contest tonight. Jeffrey was by far the most interesting and the best asset choice for Food Network. Melissa kept saying that she was "every Woman" and that she represented all women everywhere. She doesn't represent me or my lifestyle. I don't have a nanny, I haven't been at the top of the corporate ladder, and I'm not a stay at home mom. The choice for a "star" should be a cook who is unique and very, very individual. I agree with the comment posted that called Melissa "cookie cutter" because that is truly what she represents. Her "style" is already personified by several other personalities on Food Network. I believe Jeffrey is less typical and had far more range as a cook. Melissa's main dish always involved chicken. What happens to the vegetarian diet on Melissa's show. Jeffrey was versatile in most of his dishes, and did not emphasize one ingredient to the point of making dishes seem limited and repetitious. I also believe the finale pointed to Melissa as the winner before the announcement was made. Watching the final show, the camera did not give fair attention to both contestants. Melissa was given far more recognition than Jeffrey, and that was biased in my opinion. Also, speaking of bias, do these judges really base their choices on fair assessments? Maybe, rather than the "Next Food Network Star", there should be a show titled, "The Next Food Network Judge"!

  43. abby says:

Not to mention…Has anyone even thought of how she intends to RAISE 4 CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 3 and be a "star" on tv?!?!?! Oh my goodness, her show will blow up in smoke so quickly. Especially since there are already MULTIPLE shows that do the EXACT same thing that she intends to do. THIS IS SO LAME. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED.

  44. Lori says:

The judges got this one wrong…. just what a stay at home mom doesn't want to watch is another stay at home mom that is now on TV doing what I do everyday.. cooking for my family.

So Melissa has a recipe for 4 ingredient chicken with interchangeable ingredients… and a story to tell.

Jeffrey makes the stay at home mom want to tune in because those eyes talk to us. He brings excitement to us. I could learn about so many different spices and recipes to use them in. And I am sure that The Food Network would tell us where to buy the ingredients. Jeffrey is star quality and I hope the Food Network finds a place for Jeffrey. Very dissappointed that the Judges felt that another cheap meals on a budget program is needed. .Seems like they had the show before they picked the winner and that Melissa fits the program better than Jeffrey..that is because he has sooooo much more to offer.

  45. Monk says:

"Boy, in reading some of these comments, I have to say there are a lot of know-it-alls who think Jeffrey should have won. I wonder what show they have been watching? Melissa beat him more times than not and, even though some are saying she isn’t a “chef,” well, so what…she can cook and that’s the same thing!. Grow up and quit acting like spoiled children who didn’t get their way!! Boo-hoo!!!Way to go Melissa — you rock!!! Or…is it that a Texan beat out a Californian??? Way to go Texas!!!

    diane4commonsense on August 3, 2009 at 1:48 am "

I am from Texas and found Melissa to be a irritating, egotistical and annoying.

  46. Catie C says:

Diane4… if their links are back up you should be able to catch the interview.

  47. jerajdai says:

    JEFFREY SHOULD HAVE WON

    • Jen says:

This is ridiculous. Melissa's show echoes the whole blonde stay at home Mom thing over and over again. I watched her pilot and god, I can't stand it. Her lipgloss and fake smile is glaring. Will definitely not be watching this show.

      • luvcookin says:

So don't watch it. There are several shows on FN that people do not watch for various reasons. That's why there is a variety of hosts and points of view. There are many people who will watch her show as is evidenced by the Fan Fave vote, Melissa is winning. Additionally on the 'Who Would You Eliminate" vote, Jeffrey won that by a landslide with 61%.

      • luvcookin says:

And by the way, why do you single out blondes? Jealous? I'm a blonde and I'm currently in college. Have made the Dean's List with a 4.0 the past 3 semesters! Geesh! I know plenty of brunets and redheads who are not nearly as smart.

        • teamjeffrey says:

good for you luvcookin, what do you want a gold medal?! you clearly need to continue your education if you think people are jealous of melissa because she's blonde! you're an idiot, take your dean's list and celebrate with your mommy and daddy because when you get into the real world nobody cares about your 4.0, if you don't have people skills along with your books smarts then your 4.0 isn't going to get you anywhere in life. but of course, an educated person like yourself would already know that!

          • luvcookin says:

First of all, this is exactly what people have been talking about. If you had actually read the posts, you would have seen that I was responding to Jen's remark regarding blondes. Jen's remark implied that SHE is jealous of blondes. By the way, teamjeffrey, my parents are dead so thanks for stirring up those memories.

        • Heather says:

So wait, you have the audacity to boast about having a 4.0, making the Dean's List, and being smarter than people with other hair colors, yet you spell BRUNETTES wrong. Try again.

    • kkjrascher says:

I was looking forward to watching Jeffrey. I sure won't be watching Melissa. She's more annoying than the Neeleys.

    • Linda_S says:

But he didn't. He expected to win, But he didn't.
I really enjoyed him most of the time, but he had a few lapses also. He had two disasterous dishes, including the risotto which is a basic of classic Italian cuisine and shouldn't have been attempted in that setting. He should have known that..
Then, despite the great sandwich he prepared in his pilot, he fidgeted and swayed from side to side to the point where I found it distracting and my husband, usually a calm and quiet person, shouted at the TV "STAND STILL FOR HEAVENS SAKE!". Melissa came off calm, collected and completely organized. And she was again full of those neat tidbits that characterize her work. I love ti. I'm glad she won.She worked so hard to improve and grow throughout the competition that you had to hope she could carry it off. I also liked the way she accpeted criticism and incorporated it into her approach.
I hope we see Jeffrey in a FN program soon; I think that they are working on it.
      Linda

      • Manny says:

Linda that is really ridiculous. Jeffrey's pilot was so awesome. Have you read these blogs? Most of the people agree that his pilot was superior than Melissa's.

      • Foodie too says:

Well said, Linda. In the end I did want Jeffrey to win, and I truly enjoyed his pilot. However, you are absolutely correct in saying that Melissa worked hard to improve, as the judges critiqued her. She was also gracious in the end, before the announcement was made. I'm confident that we will see Jeffrey, just like we keep seeing other competitors for previous competitions who did not win the ultimate title, like Aaron Sanches and Adam Gertler, etc.

        • Heather says:

I don't know if "worked hard to improve" is really the way to word it, and her graciousness seemed completely fake to me. It looked to me as though she wanted her appearance to be seen as gracious so she covered her Better-Than-Thou attitude with all the kind remarks. I really do NOT understand at all how everyone is interpreting her overwhelming cockiness with confidence intermingled with strands of humility. Don't her remarks speak for themselves? My jaw dropped (and it looked like Susie's eyes popped) when she first ever started making the claims that SHE was the one who was going to bring home cooking to Food Network. She repeatedly claimed to be the ONLY one who would be serving that demographic with her show on Food Network. I want to know what channel she's been watching because if any of that were true, there would not be numerous remarks throughout the thousands of comments about how Food Network already has so many shows for the stay at home moms trying to cook for their families.

They obviously were hoping to get another Rachael Ray but I think they were grossly mistaken. Like my boyfriend and I agree – what they are really looking for is another Rachael Ray or another Guy Fieri. So really, you need only try out if you are like either of them.

    • Tracy says:

Jeffery will probably get his own show because Susie, the Director of Brand Marketing-and she knows what sells,-obviously argued over and over again in the final two shows to keep him (review your film fellow fans).
I think he is fabulous but they didn't choose him for number of reasons other than talent alone. There are some other underlying factors in his personality, you can just tell.

I don't know, just a marketing girl making an honest opinion on a safe bet with Melissa. However Melissa is a wonderful choice.

    • Jane says:

I agree. between the two I would have liked to see Jeff win. I'm watching Melissa's new show right now, andi sorry to say… its boring!

      • Sorry Jane, but I must disagree. I watched Melissa's show today and was totally entertained and have already marked her show for recording each episode! I found her very instructive, easy to understand and am headed to the web site to print off her recipes. It is refreshing to watch someone using ingredients that I already have in my pantry/refrigerator/freezer. Thanks Food Network for adding this great show to your line-up1

After watching today's show with Melissa I have to agree. I liked both of them. I was hoping she would do better.

I was sorely disappointed. She needs to take a breath and speak slower IMO. I doubt I will watch her show again.

You guys got me hooked! I have enjoyed the process to seeing the next Food Network Star. What a great season this has been. I am so excited that Melissa won! I enjoyed Jeffrey but I know that I will enjoy watching Melissa and I will learn a lot from her new show. Good Job!

You said it at the end of the show Bob in so many words: You just want another Rachael Ray clone. Melissa offers nothing new to the network. You guys are so uncreative and unimaginative it’s unbelievable. Nobody will learn much of anything from Melissa beyond the first two weeks.

    • Cassie says:

I don't agree at all. Melissa has a HUGE appeal to young moms on a budget like me. Rachel, while possibly a similar personailty, doesn't have kids and usually has more than 10 ingredients in her recipes – I know, I have a few of her cookbooks and am limited to only a few that I can make on a budget of basic ingredients. Like Bob said, her tips and tricks are so helpful! I know I will learn LOADS from watching her, probably a few new tips every episode. I liked Jeffrey and would have watched his show if it was on, but Melissa has a show that I will be SURE to watch every time!!!

    • Lynn says:

I agree. Melissa is nothing new when you already have Rachel and Sandra. I also find her personalilty to be over the top and got tired of what felt like her poor me sob stories on the show. Jeffrey would have brought something new and exciting to the network even if he were zen like at times. I, for one, won't be watching her.

      • Lynne says:

I was not looking forward to Melissas show today as I don't anticipated learning anything new from her. I am also busy busy great home cook. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and sorry to say, I was very very dissapointed in the show. I don't know how she can claim that tort cost her $4.00 when the gruere alone would be clearly more than that in my market. You can't buy 41.99 worth of cheese or bacon. I am tired of hearing about her mom and lucky her living in Paris. blah blah and boo hoo

    • Jean says:

I totally disagree! As a mother of three and a Middle School teacher I have very little time and a very tight budget. Melissa and her 4 step chicken is exactly what I am looking for! As a fan of Rachael's I can tell you rarely can I duplicate any of her recipes in an hour, let alone 30 minutes!!!!

  50. Barbara says:

No, Jeffrey should NOT have won.
