The First Cut Is The Deepest

The first episode is always the hardest elimination. Though we (judges) don’t have any attachments yet to any finalists, we also are just getting to know them. So figuring out who should stay and who should go is always a combination of intuition, a few pieces of evidence, and a lot of what you think their potential might be. Basically, you’re filling in a lot of blanks on your own.

But sometimes when I watch the final cut of the show as a viewer – out of the heat of battle, and fully edited with all the interviews and behind-the-scenes footage put in – I get a different point of view. In this episode, I’m not sure we sent the right person home.

Jen Isham The Food Network stars agreed that Jen had one of the worst dishes of the day. In both conception and execution, her green bean dish was below par. So I immediately questioned if she had the culinary expertise and technique to pull off her “Housewife 2.0″ conceit. But watching her interviews, I found her funny, bright and tart. Humor is a trump card – anyone who can make an audience laugh instantly hooks them. Jen is funny.

Eddie was the other candidate at the bottom of the pack. His BLAST bowl – inferior ingredients not elevated at all by cooking technique – was one of the other worst received dishes. When I was going through the buffet line I asked him about his culinary POV and got a torrent of words that made no sense. I asked him to say it in one line and he couldn’t. His presentation was earnest, no hint of humor or passion.

If I had it to do again, I probably would have voted to send Eddie home. But I’m hoping that it was just nerves that strangled Eddie into dullness. Otherwise, he’s got a killer combo of intelligence, looks, food passion and rebel personality that could pay off. With Jen on the other hand, I felt like she had already laid all her cards on the table. I liked her. I think both she and Eddie can probably cook better than either did on this one day. But I thought her point of view and culinary command would limit her greatly. Eddie just seemed to have many more possibilities.

I agree with a lot of the previous comments. Even as a full blooded Korean myself, I still feel that Debbie should have been the one kicked off. She lied and was called on it by the judges. I understand that Jen’s item was a little too simple, but at least she didn’t lie. I am all about having a more diversity in programs but I know that if Debbie does make it to the end that I won’t be watching her show.

  2. troy says:

of the bottom three i would have sent eddie packing and give jen and brett more time to impress. eddie's presentation is long and boring and the viewer such as me would simply switch the channel. brett at least will keep you laughing and he can be put into a guy fieri kinda thing. I can see jen doing a sandra lee kinda thing but would have to see more of her cooking thus to me eddie was the logical choice but alas he did not get the boot. jen got the boot unfortunately. would love to see jen get another chance to prove herself.

  3. Turned off to this season says:

I just saw the first episode and second episodes tonight. I have watched the last three seasons and I always look forward to it and rooting the contestants on. I am just really disturbed after watching both shows tonight. I have no desire to tune in to root for anyone. There are several people I like, but only Jakima shines. But more power to the folks last season. Aaron, Adam, Kelsey were all worth rooting on every step of the way.

  4. Linda Caldwell says:

i watched the show tonite and Jamika won, why was her greens and cornbread not featured in the magazine of good house keeping instead a Healthy in a Hurry dish was develop? what is the matter with showing her greens and cornbread to southern for good housekeeping. stick to the program guys.

  5. Linda Caldwell says:

why was Jamika’s greens and cornbread not featured in Good housekeeping too southern for the magazine, instead you choose to feature a made up second dish Healthy in a Hurry that was not part of the show’s dish her greens and cornbread was great according to you?

  6. nancy says:

I like the well versed guy with the longish hair. Seems to know his food and speaks well. I wonder if whomever was responsible for posting the winner on the website a day early last year was transferred to another position.

  7. Ellen says:

I certainly think you were right in sending Brett home tonight. His undeniable personality seems to disappear whenever he gets in front of the judges, and the quality of his food apparently goes up and down. It does seem a shame to me that he tried to throw Melissa under the bus because she didn’t acknowledge his help. It was equally ungracious of her NOT to thank him and Teddy for helping her, since it’s clear that her plating wouldn’t have been completed without both of them. I have watched this show ever since it began, and it seems to me that there is a remarkable lack of integrity and underhandness this season. Is Debby going to stay on forever, just because she appeals to Susie Fogle? Is she going to be allowed to lie and manipulate the judges endless because of her minority status? Surely not!

  8. Diana says:

I have to say, I was appalled at some of the things I saw tonight. Those two “men” asked Melissa if she needed assitance and she accepted and then they tried to throw her under the bus when she got kudos for her dish. They seem to forget that if they were to be in this job, they will have a myriad of assistants to help them. Does that mean they won’t have created their own dishes or done their job? They were ruthless and unsportsmanlike and they deserve to be eliminated for a complete lack of integrity.

  9. Ob Juan says:

    Come on judges…

Bob says character, ethics, et al, are essential to the next food network star. And, to allow Debbie to skate after throwing her teammates under the bus. She clearly dreamed up the angel food cake disaster and completely “stepped away” from it. Her lame “taking responsibility” schoolgirl routine was totally unbelievable. As a viewer, I was insulted. I mean there’s not enough stage makeup to cover her obvious character flaws.

To sum, from a viewers point of view, she lacks character, creativity, and competence. She should have been cut. For me and others, she’s non-starter…

  10. Roberta says:

My mom always told me to admit when I’m wrong or make a mistake, as people will respect that. Debbie didn’t learn that lesson. She lied. She should have been put on a platter and dissected for the liar that she is. Instead, they ignored it and passed her through. I hope the judges look at these posts. They should be aware that with all of us watching, the intregrity of the show depends on what they do with her. I’ll be watching for now; if she wins, I’m gone.

  11. Nancy says:

We loved Brett. He makes us laugh! Katie should have left the show, and Debbie’s dishonesty in the first show is why she should have left.

  12. Nancy says:

Loved Brett. He made us laugh. Debbie was dishonest in first show, she should have left. Katie on the second show. Her approach to healthy eating is preaching. She looks very uncomfortable on camera. We love Jefferey.

  13. Nancy says:

Love Brett, and Jeffrey. Why keep dishonest Debbie, and uncomfortable Katie ?

  14. troy says:

i did not see the episode with jen but she is easy on the eyes but it would seem that her cooking is not as tastey as she is beautiful. am not sure about her being released since i did not see the episode but i do not think brett should have been released.

  15. troy says:

this is first and foremost a cooking show and not a popularity contest. some of the contestants are over the top in their acting such as brett, micheal and teddy. remember, robert irvine was accused of lieing about his chef resume but his skill as a chef and on-screen personality and fan following convinced network to bring him back thus debbie is in good company.

  16. Fiddlesticks says:

Yep, they talked about integrity at the very beginning, then they keep Debbie. She didn’t want to fess up to her lie until they really pushed her on it. So they keep the one that lied AND chose to use store-bought angel cake for dessert for the foodnetwork top brass and they toss Jen because of the green beans? Doesn’t make sense. Katie – I just don’t see it…AT ALL! Melissa – a whiney crybaby – does she think she’s the ONLY one who’s not in her own kitchen where she knows where everything is? I thought it was funny last night (the 15th) when she was busted for having the guys help her. Michael – before the season started I was ready to be annoyed with him but I am not – we’ll see. Teddy – nothing one way or the other. Kind of glad Brett is gone – he always looked too apologetic. As for FOODNETWORK shows/people, someone on here said Giada is a snob. YES! I almost never watch her anymore. AND someone should tell her showing all of your teeth isn’t necessarily smiling. Used to enjoy the Neelys but is it me getting tired of the show or is the Mrs. getting louder and LOUDER and LOUDER?

  17. Rob says:

Off to a bad start this year. Too much pressure – 16th anniversary party – for the first show. Debbie should have been eliminated. She lied and didn’t take responsibility and did not produce decent food. If you want to know more about her — take her to lunch. So far there are no stars even faintly glimmering in the show. I guess the show is really already filmed and done but so far it is a real bust.

  18. David says:

Composing this on the Monday, 15 June, I had reflection time and I think that the Judges could have eliminated not just Brett, but Debbie as well. Brett’s sexist (sweetie and girlie) remarks were not consistent with the commitment to diversity and equality standards that the FoodNetwork maintains. I was glad that Brett exited, but the judges missed the boat with Deb as well. Kevin even commented about her overt lying “that the Team came in on budget” with the $1200 shopping task. That right there-lying, regardless of her cooking skill, energy, or passion is not acceptable. While she “owned-up” to it, it was not a good first-showing.

Having watched this show for several seasons, I can easily pick my eliminations after two episodes. I want to see the Next Food Network Star show passion, desire, diversity, honesty in who they are (Michael is a fantastic example), and an ability to communicate to me skills and techniques about the food that they love. They need to communicate clearly and know food so that I can “know” their food. We want this person to become part of our Family. I am anxious to see how the next “tests” illustrate my points.

  19. Dave says:

I thought Debbie should have been eliminated for lying and for her “Gatekeeper of Badness” shrimp. I think Eddie is boring and should soon be eliminated. And I was glad to see Brett gone after the way he tried to sabotage Melissa during the review. And diversity at the cost of fairness isn’t worth a damn.

  20. food observer says:

lately, i have to check my channel guide to make sure that i’m tuned in to a food show, and NOT a soap opera. there is so much of this ‘challenge’ stuff on the network lately–that it’s hard to real cooking anymore. bob, please bring in some real, down to earth, accomplished chefs, like melissa murphy–we need a good baking show again after the departure of gale gand. how about alton brown doing a series on equipment reviews? i really enjoyed the espresso episode, and would have really appreciated it if he went in more detail about the different brands of espresso machines, and how each one scored–like they do in america’s test kitchen. there seemed to be a lot of promising ‘next food network’ stars from the bobby flay throwdown challenges–especially the dumpling throwdown (the chef from ‘good fork’ if you’re looking for diversity), and the mac-n-cheese throwdown(delilah- is so delightful). also, i think miriam and stephanie deserve their own show after all these years as bobby’s assistants.
as far as the criticism by bobby of the oral presentations of the participants–remember, bobby, when u first started out? you WERE a chef, and not a tv personality. once the right combination is found–you’ll probably hire an image consultant to brush up and groom them to be on tv. i believe it may be a real ‘challenge’ to find the right combination of cooking, personality, true nature, true passion of cooking from these participants. it is really sad to see the behavior of some of these individuals. instead of the passion for the food being revealed, we are being insulted with all the insecurities, lies, and superficialness which unfortunately stands out. no one seems to be having fun!!! alas, i will have to revert to pbs, and stick to my faves (of whom some were lost by food network): ming tsai, lidia, jacques pepin, jamie oliver, anthony bourdain, and yes, even gordon ramsey.
be mindful, that the few remaining good ones will not jump ship, also.

  21. Stefanie says:

I agree that they needed to cut Brett. He was just not watchable in my eyes…but I do want to add one thing… some of the faces Mr. Bobby Flay made and critisms about “acting” were somewhat comical to me. I LOVE his cooking but man the boy can’t act! The only one reaction I ever saw of his that was a keep is in the new throwdown with Jamaican cooking where he is asked if he is using a batter … his facial reactions and take are worth a million there. I hope to see more of that Bobby.

  22. SANDRA says:

If you want this show to be honest & realistic you must stick to your guns. Debbie should have been eliminated the first round for lying & not wanting to admit it. Thank goodness cameras follow them everywhere otherwise you would not have found out until much later.

  23. Stacy says:

After this week’s episode, I would say Eddie still needs to go; with Katie following quickly behind him.

  24. Mary says:

I am glad people are commenting about the behavior of some of the FoodNetwork Stars. Giada is coming off as a snob. It seems she doesn’t like any woman who is the least bit good looking. (Last season she made some very snotty comments about Kelsey.)

  25. Mary says:

I also am not happy that Alton is rolling his eyes when some of the contestants are talking. They are nervous and doing their best. They deserve respect.

  26. John says:

I’m just sooooo glad Brett got the axe after what he and Teddy did to Melissa. His behavior was the epitome of poor sportsmanship. I’d put up with any amount of Earth Girl’s anti-oxidants not to have to watch Brett.

  27. Shelley says:

I still can’t believe that Jen got cut last week for her less than impressive green beans and yet you kept Debbie who made multiple errors – the worst being the TERRIBLE DESSERT that she came up with and didn’t take ownership of. Jen was cute & sincere

  28. Cam says:

    open words to Bob.

First, I want to tell you that I really admire you. You are a true professional. But… in regard to Debbie— what you refer to as her “missteps” , most of your viewers see as very poor errors in judgment, topped off with a deliberate move to cover up those actions. When the three of you questioned her in the last 15 minutes of the show, that was her chance to redeem herself. At that moment, an individual with true character would have stepped up to the plate and owned up to what she did. You, Bobby and Susie really need to reflect and review what happened here and understand that , yes, she DID deserve to go home with that first show. Guys, you made a mistake. It is as simple as that. It happens.

Next, we have Brett. I agree with you that there was probably some subtle softness under his whole act. Fun to watch, but since he was not really passionate and said that he was there because his friends suggested that he try this,, well, to me, that came off as very disrespectful to the whole production, to those who have a true dream, and to the judges who are putting a lot of time and effort into all of this. You made a good decision in choosing Brett to leave this week.

Lastly, you wrote in the blog about the established stars, Giada, Alton etc. I have to tell you that I am personally disappointed in them. I expect honestly and true thought when they are critiquing the food and the overall performance of the contestants. I would not want anything less. So that part is fine. But there is a way for them to share their expertise and still remain respectful to the contestants who are putting their hearts and souls into this. Giada gained her start in the first place because of her last name, so she really needs to knock it off. She was rude to Kelsey last season and it was completely obvious that the reason was because Kelsey is young and pretty. That puts Giada in a really bad light and it does not really do much for her own career. I would never buy another of her cookbooks again. Rachel Ray also pounced on Kelsey last season. She actually was rude to her right on the set. We then hear that Rachel felt that Kelsey’s dish that was made on her show lacked any originality. I almost fell off the chair when I heard that. Kelsey made a turkey meatball and egg sandwich, which is exactly what Rachel Ray would make on one of her shows. And speaking of her 30 minute meal show,, how many recipes do we need that cook chicken, meat or fish on a stove, with lemon zest on top (almost every show) and a cut up, store purchased cake (ala Debbie)with vanilla ice cream on top!

So please, do not take the blame and fault for their actions. They are big kids and their behavior is far from entertaining (if that is why the producers are even showing the unfortunate side of their personalites).

  29. Lucy says:

Debbie should be eliminated. She was the one who thought of buying Angel Food Cake and serving it. Is that the best she could come up with for dessert? Goodness, this is not a good sign for a cook – ready made Angel Food cake! Then she never admitted to the truth that it was her idea. Then she failed to provide her team with the necessary ingredient; Jeffery and others didn’t have what they needed and one girl (can’t rememeber her name) had to borrow ingredients from the other team. Debbie is about herself, herself and herself. She will bring down anyone she can to get ahead. Who wants someone like this presenting a show? For the sake of integrity – get rid of her. She insults her own ethnic group if she continues and even wins. Of all of them, Jeffrey so far is the best. But we’ll see as the show continues.

  30. Judi Hawkins says:

    Gee, where do I start.

    1. My biggest is sanitation. Iron Chef, Chopped, Next Food Network Star, Dinner Impossible, Throw Down, Chopped, are all serving food to people (i.e. Judges, guests), yet I don’t see gloves, or head coverings during prep. Does anyone wash there hands on these shows? and I can’t overlook, sticking fingers in sauces, double dipping, and my personal favorite the five second rule, when the meat fell to the floor and the Chef served it and did not get chopped for it. Hmmmmm, makes me not want to go to their restaurants or the judges either.

    2. Yes, Jen was a correct selection, I would have added bacon, mushrooms, and perhaps a cheese to her green bean dish as well as salad shrimp anything to have given it some teeth. I also thought the Jen’s Team Capt. should have offered some suggestions or not serve it. I also would like to have seen some creativity with the angel food cake, like it cut up into circles and stack them putting filling between layers and maybe drizzle chocolate on it or shaved chocolate.

    3. I was glad to see Brett go he didn’t seem to be a team player. Working in a kitchen, either in a restaurant or on a set TEAMWORK is up most and the last time I looked there is no “i” in teamwork. Eddie is a joke send him back to the bar, he has insulted the female population of the US, and if I was his girl……. he’d be reading a Dear John letter. It was too bad you couldn’t have sent two packing this week if Debbie is chosen as the Next Food Network Star you will have to pay me to watch her.

    4. I have been watching NFNS since you start it and there has only been one item I have been able to make and enjoyed, that didn’t make me enjoy it all evening long along with a half a bottle of tums. You all must have cast iron stomachs and no taste buds left to judge with.

I am not a Chef nor do I own a restaurant at this time, as a matter of fact I treat my Husband like a God and give him burnt offerings, but where I live we do have health codes.

Thank you for at least allowing me to share a few thoughts with you.

    Judi Hawkins from OHIO

  31. Joanna manolakos says:

I aree that the guy who got cut I would off gotten rid off him too.
Just because he threw was it Melisa under the bus.
    He was a jerk.
Why did he offer to help if he really did not have good intentions.
I think everyone should be a team player.

  32. Nancy Drummond says:

I agree that Debbie should have been eliminated the first week, she obviously was unorganized when shopping. She left out several ingredients the other chefs needed but was sure to get what she needed for her dish. She independently made the decision for dessert and left her team out to hang in the wind, NOT professional. How importan is integrity?

  33. Susan Pantaleo says:

I do not belive Debbie at all I do belive she is a big fat liar there is a saying about liars and she is a real lair she said she does not speak her family language is liar because the asian people do not allow their families to go with out understanding their backgrown its important to them to keep it in the family. She is a big fat liar and I would not like to watch her on any show because I do belive she is a very dishonest person I do not like a liar!!!!!!

  34. Eileen99 says:

HATED Debbie and her dishonesty/manipulation. Would NEVER watch any show she's on. Doesn't character count anymore?

  35. Debbie P. says:

Well, at first I rooted for Debbie b/c I share that name, HOWEVER, her first grocery shopping trip was a disaster. It included not purchasing specific items needed by her team members, randomly throwing items into the cart without keeping tabs on her selections, and worst of all, trying to make herself look good (by lying), in the face of the judges. By the end of that episode I was “over it” and no longer cared to watch her.
As for the guys who just wanted to “stir things up” (so to speak)and act like they are the best thing to happen to the Food Network, well at least one of them is going back to his day job.
As for loverboy, Mr. passionate, he can take his overpowering rose and be with his girlfriend. I’ve had enough. This season has been the worst.

  36. Cindy says:

I am looking forward to seeing Ina Garten next week. She is one of my favorites on the FN.

  37. GARY EDWARD JOHNSON says:

I concur with everybody else that Debbie should have been sent home.I am reassured Mr.Tuschmann that you and the other judges have put her on notice about fibbing. On a lighter note,I like Michael,he is never short of boring. He makes me laugh.

  38. Timothy Yeargin says:

I will have to say-If I were a bettin’ man, I would bet that Jeffery and Jamika will become the two finalist…love them both. If Debbie wins, I’ll not watch her show.No integrity-Jen should have gotten another chance-still should.Lying should never be acceptable on this show.Brett was the right choice this week- he shouldn’t have helped Mellisa if he was going to complain about it.Katie better really bring it this week…and get off the “antioxident train” at least until she gets a show.Right now she needs to cook and let her personality shine, and concentrate on the task at hand-if I hear her say healthy or anti-oxident this weekend I’m going to eat a steak and drink a twelve pack.Good luck to all!!!Love the show.
    Timothy

  39. i try to look for someone i would turn the tv on to watch.. the men have more snap than the woman.. the woman compettitors should all go.. I like watching the funny people , like adam and guy.. we need more of that.

  40. alden brown and guy Fiere,,,, they are the best…. emerald is getting back his old flare. thats good.. thats what i would look for in choosing a new star..

  41. Nancy H. says:

I’m appalled that the judges would let Brett get away with the stunt he pulled last week. Granted, they sent him home but his trying to sabotage Melissa was not cited as a reason. The judges have access to the tape so why did they have to act like it’s Mellissa’s word against Brett and Ted’s? And why is Debbie still there after she sold out her teammates, put back their ingredients and tried to get them to share the responsibility for her ill-conceived store-bought angel cake dessert?

  42. monique says:

Well folks…. it srtikes me that NO ONE on this show is of the caliber of last season’s show. LISA LISA LISA..and when I clicked on the site to catch up on last season’s contestants, SHE (who was really the hands down winner) isn’t listed. Did you guys completely burn your bridges with her?

Also, why no comment re: Brett’s physically abusive behavior towards Melissa? He practilly jumped on her in some wired little lunge move that was SCARY..glad he’s gone, but you should have mentioned how bizarre that was. Lastly, Aaron is Big Daddy Boring with obvious need for heavy editing by the production company STILL..yuck.

  43. Helen S says:

I’m sticking just to the problem at hand – picking a winner – never mind what the Food Network is doing wrong. If I had to choose now, I would pick Jamica and Jeffrey. Jamica is always happy when she gets a compliment and takes criticism with courage as does Jeffrey. He is a very good cook, and has wonderful personality – always smiling, not hyper and bouncing all over, seems to genuinely care about the people and others. I know this isn’t what makes a show, but personalities do come through…look at Guy Fieri and Big Daddy – wonderful talent and personality. Personally, Guy makes me nuts with his energy and his use of ” bad boy” and “that’s money” all the time, and I don’t personally like his high calorie foods, but you have to admit, he has the makings of a star and that’s why he won. He’s climbing that ladder fast . I don’t see that in any of these people this year, I doubt any of them will go far. Remember the Hardy guys or those two who did catering? They got their own show and disappeared in a hurry and many do after winning – it takes a special talent, personality, perserverance and know how to get on top on these shows.

  44. terry c says:

I would have liked to see Debby kicked off first. Everyone picks up on her lying about the dessert, but as team captain she did the shopping and at least 2 of her team members did not get the ingredients they needed. Jeffrey was missing 3 (THREE!) of the ingredients he needed.
Glad to see Bret and Eddie gone, they both seemed too full of themselves. Looking forward to waving goodbye to Teddy as well

  45. Jantina says:

Brett why didn’t you make something that looked like something else for April Fool’s Day? Talk to Bob the chef who made cake sticks with raspberry coulis look like french fries with ketchup. The guy with Ground Hog’s Day? Make something with sausage. Yeesh!

  46. kalara says:

I think Melissa and Debbie should go home they give me the willy and I like to see Jamica all the way to the top . i like to see teddy come out of his comfort zone. and be him self not trying to someone else.

  47. Debbie says:

Wow! it's pretty obvious that everyone thinks Debbie needs to go. She did lie and it was her dessert. One thing that got me was how she just ran through the store grabbing things without a clue of what she was getting. Then at the register when she was over budget she just started throwing stuff back without considering the rest of the team members that were counting on her to get their ingredients. To me that was the lowest. Personally I like Jeffory and Jamika. But no one really has any special flare that makes you want to watch them. I record the show on DVR then I watch it so I can fast forward through the boring parts and any other parts that don't intrest me. I use to love FN. Way back when Emeril use to be funny and say BAM instead of HUMMMMMMMMM with the salt. Rachal Ray could drive a wooden man/woman crazy. She rambles on and on. You can catch the last 5 minute of the show and find out everything she did and how she did it. You get a complete recap after every break. And who is she kidding with 30 minutes meals. She has a 30 show but that meal was not prepared in 30 minutes. She can pound out 4 chicken breast AND brown them in a skillet in a 2 minute break, NOT! The time scale is not true. She can make more varieties of slop than anyone I've ever seen, and come up with some strange name for it. May I also say, Giada is very annoying with her half Italian half Engish grammar. I think it is also very rude the way she corrects everyone for not saying mozzarella or spagetti the way she does. The other Italian chefs on FN, Mario Batali and Ann Burrel. They aren't errogant and they don't correct the people they are speaking to. And do you think she could wear something that her boobs aren't falling out of? But I must say, my least favorite show of all. I CAN'T STAND THE NEELEY'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His sexual comments he has to make about everything they do is sickening. She has to bump butts with someone everytime she adds spices for a KICK. If I was interested in listening to all that sexual talk I would watch an R rated movie which I do not watch. Paula Deen is a flirt but she's funny not ronchy. Pat & Gina need to leave it in the bedroom. I watch FN to learn about cooking skills and recipes and for intertainment. I love Paula, Iron Chef, Bobby's grilling shows and throwdowns, and Guy. I am also glad to see Robert Irvine back. I'm sick of the Challenges. And I'm sick of the reruns. You don't have to worry about missing a show it will always repeat 2-3 times through the week. Anything you see Fri, Sat, Sun, will be the SAME show on Monday. With 16 years of programing surely you could find enough reruns that you don't have to show the same rerun back to back. I DVR most of my shows then play them later, if it's a rerun rerun I delete it. Enough is enough.

    Debbie

  48. I watch FN anywhere from 20-30 hours/wk. The only shows I really dislike are those with Guy and “Big Daddy”. I guess I watch FN to really learn how to cook various things. I love Ina, Giada, even Rachel although most of her dishes are similar but why is Gale Gand gone? She taught some great baking lessons. I love Bobby, Tyler, Alton (put him on a weekend show), the Neeleys, Paula, Restaurant Cook and some of the challenges (Chopped is ridiculous)but if it isn’t obvious that you HAVE to get rid of Debbie and the Health Nut as well as Teddy I don’t think you’re seeing what we see. Jeffrey is your only hope this year. Michael is another Guy and I simply couldn’t take that…you’ve already got him on 3 hours a day. Remember, you can teach cooking, you cannot teach personality or ethics. Oh, thanks for bringing Robert back. He’s fun. I don’t learn anything but he’s fun. Oh, and thanks for your website. My cookbook is over 400 pages now!!!! and I cook a LOT!!!

  49. Angie S says:

I love watcing this show, but I don’t agree with some of the eliminations. The very first week, I would have thought Debbie would have gone home….she make the decision about the dessert, lied about the budget, didn’t want to take responsibility for it….then if someone serve raw food…they should not become the next star….RAW FOOD…I’m suppose take advice from her…….no way……and I feel I’m a pretty good cook (worked in a restaurant for several years) and I would not watch her show….wouldn’t believe her….And this week I couldn’t believe Jeffery and Jamica….the worst food I’ve ever seen….I really loved Melissa this week.

I am struggling to see any of the current contestants in a Food Network show.
I LOVE The Food Network. I wait for The next Food Network Star to come out it is the only show I get hooked on because of being so busy. Honestly this season seems different, the way the people are behaving and selling each other out is dissapointing. They seem like amatuer’s.
If I had to pick right now it would be between Jamica and Jeffrey. No one else shines or stands out.
